First Match and a welcome to Milton United to the DGLL
5k's pay off!
A good start to the season by the girls who had to play with no substitutes on their first game on a full size pitch and Jazz's knee taking centre stage initially until Rob called the girls over for the surprise announcement of positions and the changed formation with Kyla filling in for the missing Hannah in defence and Alysia taking the right midfield position due to a sickly Kim. A new role for Megan as a midfield sweeper would also pay dividends in the match.
Milton arrived with the same 'no subs' issue but showed no signs of it being their first game, to which we weren't aware of until later on. The game got underway with a short delay due to the earlier match having extra time.
An early well taken goal by Rhearna settled the spectators nerves but then a long range well placed shot from Milton saw the ball sneak past Caitlin, clip the post and roll in for 1-1.
Heads didn't drop and Belper continued the pressure with tiring legs upto half time.
After the well deserved break/rest and two more goals early inthe second half settled Belper down with Olivia finally blasting one over the keeper and putting in a celebration to suit after coming close 2 or 3 times in the first half.
Milton managed to pull a goal back and did send a shock through the ranks and nerves and tiredness seemed to show for a 5 minute spell. The football Belper played and the effort put out on the pitch, with the defence of Jazz, Kyla, Katie B and Macy getting the better of the forwards and finally getting the ball back down the pitch it began to pay off with Lizzie and Alysia running the midfield, with both having chances in and around the box, eventually Alysia slipped a shot under the keeper to get the 2 goal cushion back. Katie A's speed was amazing on the right wing with the defence being turned time and time again.
Kyla stepped up from defence for a corner which was returned back to her out on the edge of the box, a lofted shot back into the top right of the goal was going to be a certain goal, but a Milton handball on the line gave a penalty to Belper, resident penalty taker Macy stepped up and didnt dissappoint with a well hard struck effort that the keeper stretched to, touched but couldn't keep out.
An excellent effort by all 11 girls. Thank you to to Milton who kept playing with heads up in their first game.
