Charlie Palmer was proud of his Belper Town players after they booked a place in the Derbyshire Senior Cup final.

The Nailers triumphed 2-1 at Heanor Town on Wednesday night to set up a showdown for the trophy against either Alfreton Town or Gresley.

Karl Demidh put Heanor in front but goals from Rob Stevenson and Alex Steadman won it for the visitors.

"It's pleasing to be in a cup final – and to go to somewhere like Heanor and play the football we did to win the game," said boss Palmer.

"I'm proud of the players. We knew it would be a physical test but we didn't buckle.

"We competed with them and also managed to get the ball down and play some good football."

Palmer added: "When I came to the club, the team were fourth from bottom of the league.

"We've moved up the table and now the players and supporters have a cup final to look forward to, so it keeps our season going."

Belper turn their attention back to Evo-Stik Division One South as they prepare to face runaway Evo-Stik First Division South leaders Stafford Rangers at the Marston's Stadium tomorrow.

Stafford are 17 points clear at the top, having won 22 of their 30 league games so far, including a 6-0 thrashing of the Nailers.

"We've enjoyed the cup result but now we have a big game to prepare for," said Palmer.

"Stafford are a very strong side and have some good players, particularly up front.

"They deserve to be where they are and it is a big challenge for us – but we need that."

Michael Armstrong (pictured) is a doubt after coming off at half-time at Heanor complaining of breathing difficulties.

"He's going to see the doctor about it," said Palmer.

"I'm hoping he will be OK to play but his health is the most important thing."
