It was another FA Cup success for Belper
Town who comfortably disposed of Causeway United with a scoreline that
was something of an injustice to the visitors who played their part in an
absorbing game.
Belper Town
welcomed back Anthony Wilson after a three-match suspension and he went
straight into the side on the right of midfield.
The Nailers had
a new face between the posts due to Adam Ogden’s enforced absence through
suspension and Mick Clark was recruited from Ossett Albion as
cover.
Gary
Middleton had recovered from injury and was selected ahead of Joe
Appleyard who had to be content with a place on the bench, while Krystof
Kotylo made a swift return the side after a two game absence.
Belper’s
opponents Causeway United had made a similarly disappointing start to
their league programme in the Polymac Midland Alliance League
with both sides
having won only in the FA Cup.
It was an
explosive start for the Nailers who took the lead in emphatic style after
barely 30 seconds.
Hannah’s
first touch of the ball produced a perfect cross for Danny Toronczak to
head in his sixth goal of the season.
Ben Stretton
had Causeway’s first effort in the 6th minute but Mick Clark was able to
shepherd the ball safely around the upright.
Toronczak’s
persistence led to Belper taking a two-goal lead on 14 minutes.
Causeway
defender Mark Smith tried to run the ball out of play but Toronczak stole
the ball off him and crossed immediately for Ross Hannah to head home
from close range.
Andy Rushbury
put over a good cross in the 19th minute but Toronczak
couldn’t make full contact with the ball, and Jon Hobson’s bold attempt at
heading from the edge of the penalty area wasn’t too far away.
Again Hannah
turned provider with some excellent work that left Danny Cox floundering,
resulting in a testing cross that Anthony Wilson headed over the cross
bar.
Despite their
predicament the visitors showed some good skills on the ball and in the
28th minute produced an impressive build up which resulted in
a cross that Clark failed to punch away effectively.
Belper were
fortunate to see Mark Smith’s header come back of the cross bar and go to
safety.
Hannah struck
a well-timed volley on target in the 31st minute and Causeway
‘keeper Mark Fullwood did well to push the ball around the post.
The Nailers
were unlucky not to have gone further ahead on 35 minutes after Hannah
supplied another fine cross, but this time it Toronczak’s turn to strike
the woodwork with a header.
On the stroke
of half time Anthony Wilson took the ball 40 yards but with options to
the left and right, he opted to shoot and his effort was
disappointing.
The visitors
came out in confident mood after the break and Chris Field whipped in a
low drive just off target in the 48th minute, then Causeway
skipper Matt Aston tried his luck from 30 yards and the ball whistled
just past the angle.
In the 54th
minute Ross Hannah appeared to miss a good opportunity when he side
footed a good chance wide of the far post.
However
Causeway continued to play impressive man-to-man football and in the 63rd
minute Danny Priest finished a flowing move with a direct shot that Clark
collected safely.
Hannah
adopted his shoot on sight policy again on 70 minutes with a speculative
volley from 20 yards that fizzed past the upright.
Belper’s Mark
Smith had just come on the field when he intercepted the ball and raced
towards goal, and he would be disappointed with his shot that went
straight at Fullwood.
Belper’s
third goal on 74 minutes wrapped things up nicely for the Nailers and it
was Anthony Wilson who latched on to Danny Hudson’s long pass to steer
the ball home of the inside of the post.
It’s Belper’s
name that goes into the hat for the next round draw, but
Causeway United will feel that the result didn’t reflect their overall
contribution to a competitive FA Cup tie.
