U21s move closer to league title with big win over Eastwood
The U21s take a big step towards the title as they hit six and move four points clear at the top
The U21s named a strong side for the visit of Eastwood knowing that a win would put clear water between them and other sides at the top. From the start it was clear that the side was fully focussed and they penned a young Eastwood side back into their half. A number of good chances were created with some sharp, quick, passing football, Laurence Constable in particular creating opportunities for the forwards and it was no surprise when Dylan Garnett opened the scoring. However Mark Rathbone was called upon to make a excellent save when Eastwood broke straight through from the restart. Dylan Garnett continued to cause problems running in behind Eastwood's back four but when the second goal arrived it was an own goal, an Eastwood defender putting into his own net under pressure after a cross. Belper were in complete charge now and a fine finish from Evan Garnett curled into the bottom corner and a further goal from Fenwick Butcher meant the game was out of sight by half time.
Perhaps not surprisingly, the second half lacked the intensity of the first. Evan Garnett got a second goal, another own goal completed Belper's scoring and in between Eastwood missed a penalty.
It was an excellent performance demonstrating the strength and depth of the Belper side. The win takes the U21s four points clear at the top of the league. Only Carlton can catch them now and this would require Belper to lose both their remaining games and for Carlton to win both, turning round an inferior goal difference of 21. The U21s now look forward to the cup final against AFC Mansfield at Sheffield FC on Thursday 4th May and then the final two league games against AFC Mansfield on Monday 8th May and Borrowash Vics on Friday 12th May.
