U21s move into semi final
U21s move into semi final with 4-0 win over Heanor Town
The U21s faced Heanor Town for a place in the semi finals and a tie away to Sheffield United. They'd got there after a 4-2 win in extra time against Haworth Colliery in the previous round. In that game the U21s had started well but lost their way and there was a determination that this wouldn't happen again. In the event, it was one of the sides best performances of the season. Playing a slightly different formation, there were excellent individual performances from the whole squad, with several players doing their case for First Team consideration no harm. The U21s played some very good football when in possession, worked hard to win the ball back and looked well organised defensively.
The U21s started very brightly putting Heanor under immediate pressure. Bullock and Taylor looked really sharp , with Constable linking up well and good support from Knowles and Cartwright. It was no surprise when after another flowing move, Taylor beat the keeper to put the U21s in front. Belper continued to press well and were soon 2-0 up when Constable robbed the defender and finished clinically. Heanor did threaten on a couple of occasions but Belper could have been further ahead creating a number of good chances. They made it 3-0 before hard time when Barnes who'd had an excellent defensive game, found himself clear in the box to finish past the keeper. The tie looked out of Heanors reach and this was confirmed when Taylor grabbed his second just after half time. Belper managed the remainder of the game well, playing some excellent possession football. Rathbone and the back four of Parker, Broughton, Brumby and Gandola looked comfortable with Gandola making some threatening runs from full back. Taggart, Wood and New all came on to make good contributions and Belper can now look forward to the semi final.
