Nailers Humiliated By High Flying Basford
The Nailers suffered an embarrassing 7-1 defeat to Basford United after being reduced to 10 men early in the second half.
A hat-trick from Ben Hutchinson, as well as goals from Matt Thornhill, Tyrelle Shannon-Lewis, Kieran Wells and Kieran Fenton.
Belper had the worst start to a second half possible; Basford made it 3-1 just 2 minutes in before Phil Watt was dismissed 2 minutes after that.
The already uphill battle got much worse as Watt went in for a high and reckless challenge that gave the referee no option but to show the centre back a red card.
Basford got themselves a quick fourth as Ben Hutchinson earned himself the match ball with his third of the afternoon.
Belper continued to battle and held Basford out till the 80th minute; Shannon-Lewis rounded Scott Low before tucking the ball into the back of the net to make it 5.
The tiring legs of the ten men were beginning to show as they continued to run riot and quickly got their 6th and 7th goals.
This was increasingly disappointing for the Nailers after a brilliant start to the game.
Evan Garnett put Belper ahead early on; a brilliant ball forward from Eric Graves picked Garnett out and the forward rolled the ball under the keeper excellently.
This came just a minute after Ruben Wiggins-Thomas hit the post with a volley. Phil Watt got to the rebound quickly but he blazed his effort over the crossbar.
Alex Steadman came close to extending the lead for Belper; his deflected effort went agonisingly wide.
Belper weren’t dominating the game but were certainly creating chances and looked as if they were ready to give Basford a game.
Basford’s equaliser came after a bit of controversy; Ben Hutchinson’s volley was flagged for offside by the referee’s assistant.
After long discussions; the referee overruled the linesman and awarded the goal to Basford.
Hutchinson made it two just before the break; it looked like a big task for Belper to overturn the deficit, but no one would have expected what came next.
