Belper manager Grant Black was unhappy with the referee in his side’s 1-1 draw with Sheffield FC, writes Richard Phelps

(On Leigh Overton) I think if we’d had him since the start of the season, which we tried to, we’d probably have another seven or eight points. He’s that good. So we’re absolutely over the moon to have him

“The game changed on an absolute crazy, crazy decision. I’m stood five yards away from it and it’s just an absolute howler from the ref,” said Black, following the result.

“It’s just baffling. It’s not a red or a yellow card, he’s got the ball. It’s as simple as that. If they’re taking that kind of tackle out of the game, non-league football is just gonna be left high and dry.”

Speaking about the game itself, he was happy with his team’s display, stating: “I thought it was a fantastic performance by the lads.

Right up to the sending-off. They had a couple of chances. Our keeper made a few good saves in the first-half.

We got our goal, we looked threatening and the back four looked very comfortable. Then we had 25 minutes to play with ten men and I thought the lads put absolutely everything on the line to try and protect that lead.”

Sheffield’s equaliser didn’t arrive until added time in the second half, with Black saying: “We just got a sucker-punch in the last minute. It deflected through a lot of bodies and ended up in the back of the net. So it’s frustrating, but as far as the lads are concerned, I can’t ask any more of them.”

“The lads are down in the dumps but we’ve just said to them that they’ve got to see that as an unbelievable effort that they’ve put in and if they do that between now and the end of the season, we’ll not be far off the play-offs.”

Black also gave his thoughts on Belper goalkeeper, Leigh Overton (pictured), who made a string of impressive saves throughout the game.

“I think if we’d had him since the start of the season, which we tried to, we’d probably have another seven or eight points. He’s that good. So we’re absolutely over the moon to have him.

“His job is to save goals and he does that on a regular basis. If we can keep him, he’ll contribute massively to us getting to where we want to be.”

Talking about forward George Milner signing a new contract with the Nailers, the Belper manager said: “I think it’s a great statement by the club.

“It’s no secret that we’ve had four or five teams from higher leagues speaking to George and wanting to get his signature.

“But he’s enjoying his football with us, he likes working with us, he’s learning and playing. It shows good intent by the club and that they’re going in the right direction if a player like that wants to commit his future to the club.

“Hopefully, that’ll attract a lot of other lads to want to commit themselves as well, for next year and help attract other players too.”
