Graves "Elated" After Win Over Promotion Chasing Leek

Belper Town captain Eric Graves was jubilant after his side's dramatic late win against high flying Leek Town.

The Nailers got a late penalty after Evan Garnett was brought down in the 85th minute.

The referee originally signalled for a free kick; but after consulting with his lineman, he pointed to the spot, allowing Jonathan Williams the opportunity to win it for his side.

After Graves criticised referee’s earlier in the week; he felt that the official’s made the correct decision this time around.

He said: “It was a definite penalty; I’m the one who played the ball into Evan and the player that’s fouled him has just come from behind him, gone to clear it but caught Evan instead.

“The referee gave the foul straight away but he thought it was outside of the box; so I’ve given a shout to the linesman and he’s said that it was inside the box and of course Johno doesn’t miss very often.”

This came just four days after the Nailers were cruelly beaten 3-2 with Belper conceding a controversial late goal against Bedworth United.

Graves said that this almost made the win feel even better and praised his side for the way they got back to their best.

The skipper said:”I’m obviously elated after that to get three points in the end especially after the disappointment of Tuesday.

“It’s a big result against a big team; I’ve been here numerous times over the years and I’ve only had one result so it’s a hard place to come.

“I said on Tuesday that we have to get back to being hard to beat so to get the clean sheet is great and to nick the late goal is even better.”

The Nailers would certainly have gone into the tie as underdogs; coming up against a side who, at kick off, sat in fifth place.

Graves believes that this result shows that his side do have the potential to be pushing towards the top half of the table.

The midfielder said: “We’ve always known that we have what it takes to beat these sorts of teams; it’s just all about being consistent and we unfortunately haven’t been so far this season.

“All the lads worked their socks off; but I think Haydn Goddard was brilliant at left back, first time he’s played there for us.

“He’s kind of been thrown in the deep end with that; especially because they’ve got a couple of good wingers.

“He certainly stood up to the task brilliantly and showed he can play the ball as well and got a lot of our attacks going today.”

The Nailers will be looking to pull off yet another shock in their next fixture when they travel to third place Spalding United.
