When the fixture list determined that Belper Town would travel to highly fancied Kidsgrove on the opening day, many people feared the worse.

That will give the players great self belief that if we maintain our standards we could surprise some teams this season

But after an impressive 3-1 win at the Novus Stadium, perhaps those people might now start to believe that Belper Town could achieve something special this season.

Charlie Palmer was extremely happy with his side's performance and feels that his players will believe in themselves more after a great result.

“It’s pleasing to come to one of the so called favourites and to play the way we did.

“We played with great passion, we worked hard and moved the ball well.

“We got in, around and down the sides of them and caused them problems all afternoon.

“It was disappointing to end the half on level terms but everyone makes mistakes, but what was good about it was that there were signs in the first half that we could get a result.

“In the end, we’ve come away with a great result and an equally good performance.

“That will give the players great self belief that if we maintain our standards we could surprise some teams this season.”

Jonathan Williams (pictured) opened the scoring for the Nailers before Anthony Malbon levelled from the spot. Williams restored the lead for Belper Town before Reuben Wiggins-Thomas made it 3-1.

Palmer singled out Jonathan Williams as his team's key man in the game, however he says that every single one of his players played well.

“In some ways it is unfair to single out any one player but Jonathan Williams obviously played well, got himself two goals so people are going to say he was man of the match.

“Since I joined the club, he is one of the players that I have been trying to make realise how important he is to the team, on and off the ball.”

Palmer's team are back in action against Newcastle Town on Tuesday night and Palmer wants more of the same from his side.

“We need the same appetite from the lads, the same desire to compete and if they continue to work they have today and they did against Matlock they will get more goals and more results like this throughout the season.”
