Belper Town boss Charlie Palmer is hot on the trail of three players for next season – with an experienced striker top of his summer shopping list.

"It is very evident from last season that we need a goal scorer,” he said.

“I’m not blind and the supporters are not blind.

“As soon as Evan Garnett signed for Kidderminster last season the goals stopped flowing in.

“We finished up with a winger top-scoring but he needs some responsibility taking off his shoulders.

“If we can do that then, when games are tight, we might be able to turn them into three points.”

However, Palmer warned: “Goal scorers come at a price, so that is what I am up against at the present moment.

“People have got to understand goal scorers demand an amount of money and I am trying to control the wages.

“But I am hoping to sign up to three players by the end of the week if possible, one of whom would fit this bill.

“All three would improve our squad and we also have another two or three players coming down pre-season who are of good quality.”

After helping steer the club to a 13th place finish following his arrival last October at a time when the Evo-Stik NPL Division One South club were starting to look like they may suffer a second successive relegation, Palmer said next time around he wanted to be in the shake-up at the other end of the table.

“What I want to get across to the players and the public is that, while I came in and stabilised the club, finished midway and reached a cup final, if people believe I am happy with that and will take each game as it comes next season, they are wrong,” he said.

“The players I have got and want to bring in are good enough to give us aspirations of being there or thereabouts.

“It would be nice for a club such as ours to be in the top six or seven, come the end of the season to be in the fight for the play-offs.

“Without being in the cup final this season, we’d have had nothing.

“I am not saying we are going to win promotion, but I want to put us in a position where we’ve got the right tools to be there or thereabouts.

“It will be a tough league. We’ve seen the clubs that have come into the league, but I’m trying to get the right players in regarding their experience, ability and, most importantly, finance so we don’t overstretch ourselves to ensure we can challenge with the better teams in that league.”
