Manager Charlie Palmer was left frustrated by his sides defending, despite the Nailers winning 4-2 over Ashby Ivanhoe

Charlie Palmer regarded the Nailers 4-2 win over Ashby Ivanhoe as a good workout for his players but he acknowledged that there is much to be worked on before the 2016/17 season begins.

The Nailers found themselves 2 goals adrift before scoring four goals themselves to give the team a victory in their first pre-season game.

“Going into the season, we will certainly need to improve in defence but this is something that the lads will be working on in training”, said Palmer.

“There is a lot to be worked on in the midfield but, to be fair, we did have six key players missing at Ashby.”

“I wasn’t particularly worried when we fell behind as I know that we have players who will definitely score when they get the opportunity.

“We conceded two very sloppy goals and that needs to be ironed out so we will be working on the back line for sure”

This game against Ashby Ivanhoe was the first time that a number of players will have represented the club and no doubt they will have been looking to impress the manager in order to secure them a first team place.

Two players who enhanced their claims were Jordan Ball and Reuben Wiggins-Thomas (pictured) both of whom got a goal apiece.

“I was also impressed by Jermaine Hollis who I previously worked with at Long Eaton United so I knew what to expect from him, also Jordan Ball and Reuben who both picked up goals for themselves, which was good to see.

“I was also please for young Dominic (Allen) who elected to play at Ashby despite going through a tough time recently.”

“With Reuben (Wiggins-Thomas) I know what I’m going to get. He’s a fantastic striker and whenever he gets through he’s going to score.

“I’ve seen a lot of him and I’m confident that he will be a great asset for us in the new season.”

Charlie Palmer's attention now turns to South Normanton Athletic, who the Nailers visit on Thursday night.

This will be the first opportunity for Nailers fans to see the new players on show.
