Belper Town boss Charlie Palmer says he can see his players improving as their pre-season schedule continues this week, writes Dominic Hynes.

The Nailers drew 0-0 at South Normanton Athletic last Thursday before then beating Staveley Miners Welfare 4-1 on Saturday.

And Palmer has been pleased by what he’s seen so far.

He said: “The players are clearly getting fitter, obviously they’re competing and they have a clear understanding of what we are trying to achieve.

“With the support play we’ve created some good chances and we scored some good goals.

“But to be fair in pre-season it is all about getting players fit.

“We’ve had one injury at Staveley to Jermaine Palmer, but looking from Ashby, to South Normanton, to today, there is a good progression in each game.

“The games coming up are going to be sterner tests and my lads are going to need to recognise that they have to maintain the levels of progress that they have been achieving.”

After the impressive 4-1 win at Staveley, Palmer said: “Today’s performance was a big improvement from the South Normanton game.

“I was looking for us to start having more of an end product in the last third, and we created some good chances in the first 25 minutes, however I feel that at times we tried to walk the ball into the net, but to be fair the lads are buying into what we are looking to achieve.”

The Nailers had both Jonathan Williams (pictured) and John Guy return to the team for their first pre-season games this year, both players manage to bag themselves goals.

Palmer added: “Jonathan has just returned from his holidays and obviously found it difficult out there with the weather, but he’s needed minutes and with the way we play football he’s going to be crucial and I thought he did well.

“John Guy also did well, he got a good amount of minutes and it was good for him to get a goal.”

The next game for the Nailers is a home game against National League North side, Nuneaton Town at the Marston’s Stadium tonight.

This will be the first home game for the Nailers and the players will be looking to impress the fans.
