Webster reflects on draw with Spalding United

Belper bossed the majority of the 1-1 draw with Spalding yesterday and could’ve taken three points back to the Marstons Stadium, writes Nathaniel Kay.

Although the weather was sub-zero, Aaron Webster gave a warming reception to his sides performance.

‘Looking back across the 90 minutes we did a lot more than them. Coming away with a 1-1 draw is disappointing but to have the character, resilience and that bit of quality to get back into the game.’

‘I said to the lads, maybe a month or two ago we lose that game.’

Much like the midweek win at Kidsgrove, the team radiated confidence on and off the ball, rarely giving the home side a sniff and Webster was first to hail this.

‘Again the front four were a threat, I think we when we play like that it gives the whole team confidence. You can now see the back four taking an extra touch.
You can see the two holding midfielders gaining confidence and we passed the ball really well. I was really impressed with stuff today.’

Daniel Brooks converted a penalty after Hayden Goddard fouled Cenk Acar early in the first half to open the scoring for Spalding, yet Webster still saw positives from the full back.

‘Yeah we started really well, but you can’t let one ball into the box be that much of a problem and giving a penalty away. That was disappointing.

‘Even giving the penalty away and being 1-0 down and Hayden gave it away, the way he’s reacted he’s had a hell of a game. So only positives coming from that.’

Lee Williamson stroked an artful freekick just past the hour to level the tie but Belper really should’ve pushed on for more with their intent going forward and this supplied Webster’s only negative of the team.

‘I think we were a little bit too nice. A little bit of complacency, the amount we had the ball in their defensive third where we tried a little bit too much rather than being a little bit more direct and ruthless and going straight for the jugular.’

On team selection, the side was virtually unchanged from Wednesday aside from Sam Birks being recalled at the last minute, as Alex Steadman was withdrawn due to a car crash suffered before the game. Both Birks and Max Thornberry received praise from the manager post-match and with the side finally looking settled, Webster suggested starting places won’t be easy to come by.

‘It’s for everybody to give me a headache. I don’t want them to give me an easy job. On a Thursday and Friday evening I want it to be difficult. I want everyone saying, ‘Gaffer, I want to be in the team.’
It will only bode well for us going forward if that’s the case.’

With another midweek fixture upcoming against strugglers Romulus, Webster won’t let the league table mask the strength of opposition. However, he stays completely optimistic in his squad.

‘We’ve just got to look at our last two performances and just think ‘Wow, we are actually good.’

‘We’ve just got to believe that whoever it is, Romulus at the bottom or anyone at the top, we are capable of beating anyone when we play to our full maximum and that’s what we’ll try and do.’
