Belper showed great fight in thrilling cup tie, but League 1 side Mackworth just edged it with late winner.
Sunday saw Belper Town Ladies face Division 1 side Mackworth St Francis, in the Derbyshire FA County Women’s Cup at Alton Manor. A free kick from Belper winger Emma Pickard gave Mackworth no option but to bundle the ball into their own net giving Belper an early lead. Mackworth later equalised resulting in a half time score of 1-1.
The second half was equally as competitive, as both teams fought for a place in round 2. Mackworth took the lead early in the second half before Belper’s Dame of the Game Louise Hawley equalised. Mackworth then took the league once more but another well worked set play produced the Belper equaliser when Alice Liggett found the back of then net from Emma Pickard’s corner.
Belper fought hard but Mackworth’s attackers were relentless, with their captain eventually giving then the lead minutes before the final whistle, with Belper this time unable to respond as the game ended 4-3 to the visitors.
The Ladies will hope to recover quickly from the cup disappointment as the race for promotion continues this Sunday. Belper currently sit in 3rd just one point off the top with a game in hand. An away victory over 2nd place Ilkeston FC Ladies will see them rise to the top of the table, if other results go their way. The game kicks off at 13:30 at Ilkeston’s New Manor Ground.
