Nailers plunder victory against 10-man Goole

Yet the Nailers had to soak up lots of pressure from the previously unbeaten Vikings, and even when they lost former Nailer, Gavin Allott after his sending off on the half hour, Belper initially struggled to make the numerical advantage count.

With an unchanged starting line up from the one that earned a point at Stamford in midweek, there were however, two new names on the substitute’s bench.

Experienced ‘keeper Steve Hernandez signed last week to provide cover for Ali Barcherini and striker Kieran Debrouwer whose previous clubs include Hucknall Town and Pinxton, arrived with a reputation for scoring goals.

The first half definitely belonged to the hosts who began the game like a team full of confidence and belief in their own ability.

Richard Adams committed the game’s first foul in the 6th minute and Goole skipper Terry Barwick hit a blistering free kick on target and Ali Barcherini made an excellent block, although Scott Ellis might have done better with the follow up.

It was all Goole for the first 15 minutes or so and the Nailers had some tough defending to do against the dangerous striking partnership of Vill Powell and Gavin Allott.

Allott, scorer of five goals in the last two games looked set to put the Vikings ahead in the 12th minute when he had a clear shooting opportunity from 15 yards, but Barcherini did well to save the shot with his legs.

A rare spell of pressure from Belper ensued with their best effort originating from a Lee Thompson free kick that Chris Wood met with his head, and Goole ‘keeper made his first serious save of the game at the foot of the far post.

Barcherini was back in action in the 18th minute by denying Vill Powell with a good block at the near post, but an increasingly niggly game exploded in the 30th minute.

Gavin Allott’s retaliation after objecting to a Richard Adams challenge saw him foolishly strike out at Adams and he subsequently received a red card for his trouble.

There was no apparent advantage for the Nailers who spent most of the remainder of the half on the defensive and in fact Goole came a whisker away from taking the lead in the 33rd minute when Matty Bloor crashed a shot against the cross bar after Powell unselfishly set him up.

It was an inauspicious start to the second period, but at least Belper were having their fair share of the ball.

Terry Barwick’s 50th minute free kick went well wide and proved to be one of the Vikings’ few threats on Barcherini’s goal, but there was very little happening at the other end either.

Kieran Debrouwer had made his debut, coming on as a half time substitute and took time to get into the game.

However in the 56th minute he gave an example of his skills by executing a slick turn on the ball and curling in a delicious cross from the left that was almost perfect for Jon Froggatt.

He also set up Aaron Pride with a neat lay off in the 70th minute and the young defender hit a superb effort from almost 30 yards that very nearly fooled Craig Parry, but the Goole custodian just managed to get his fingertips to the ball and direct it over the bar.

Ruben Wiggins-Thomas had used his pace well, especially in the second half but with little end product, however in the 80th minute he set up Belper’s winner after he sprinted away from his marker and crossed to the far post where Jon Froggatt was there to steer the ball in.

Froggatt and team mates celebrating despite calls for off side and an increasingly frustrated home crowd, but the goal stood and should have been added to in the 86th minute.

Again it was the pace of Wiggins-Thomas (pictured) that created the opportunity but this time he couldn’t deliver the ball into the danger area and the chance was lost.

Jon Froggatt’s fourth goal of the season proved to be enough to take all three points back to Christchurch Meadow and gave the Nailers a healthier look to their league position.
