The magic of the FA Cup was to come to an end for the Nailers at the expense of Daventry Town, after a defeat at Christchurch Meadow, writes Joe Malone.

Manager, Peter Duffield made one change to the team that lost to Carlton Town with Scott Low coming back in goal for David Ratcliffe.

After an impressive display in the previous FA Cup game away at Ilkeston, the Nailers were hoping for a repeat performance but two goals in quick succession for Town proved to be the sucker punch.

It was Belper who started the livelier of the two teams as they signalled their intentions early on.

Glyn Cotton’s snap shot from 20 yards bent just wide of the right hand post after just 6 minutes.

Sam Duncum then saw his headed effort cleared off the line after 21 minutes, a product of some fine work by Shaun Tuton on the right, whose cross was met by Duncum, but to no avail.

Five minutes later Duncum then hit the post when another neat move down the right hand side brought Lee Thompson to the by-line, and his cut back was volleyed by Duncum from eight yards out, but only against the post and the danger was cleared.

After a spell of Nailers pressure failed to produce a goal, Daventry sought the initiative and left Belper shell-shocked before half time.

The first incident came on 42nd minute when a floated ball into the Nailers penalty area was headed in by Ashely Robinson but the referee blew for a push on Scott Low and disallowed the goal.

But, within 30 seconds of Robinson being denied a goal, he found the back of the net once again - only this time, the goal stood.

Mykel Beckley made a charge down the left flank and cut inside onto his favourite right foot to deliver a cross to the back post for Ashley Robinson to head the ball beyond the reach of Low and give Daventry the lead.

There were no signs of Daventry resting on their laurels before half time, as they doubled their lead on the 45th minute.

This time, it was the ever dangerous Ross Oulton who played a corner in from the left which was headed out, and met by Neil King 25 yards from goal who smashed in the half volley in quite sumptuous style.

The onus was then on Belper to come out in the second half and pile the pressure on Daventry Town.

They came half way to doing so on the 63rd minute when Glyn Cotton produced a stylish goal on his left foot from outside the area which curled into the top corner and gave the Nailers hope.

There were more woodwork woes for Belper five minutes later, when Sam Duncum’s free kick was headed onto the bar from Shaun Roulston with the goalkeeper beaten.

The tempo of the game seemed to fade away in the final half hour as both teams seemed to tire. Low had an impressive display and ensured Belper would stay in the game after a series of saves in the final ten minutes.

But the Nailers were put out of their misery on the 90th minute when Ross Oulton somehow found a way though a crowded area, and drilled a low shot into the far left corner to send Belper out of the FA Cup.
