The Nailers finally secured promotion into the Evo-Stik Premier Division for the first time in their history amid wild celebrations at the final whistle, writes Joe Malone.

Manager Peter Duffield started Aaron Cole on the right wing ahead of Simon Harrison, after Cole's goal in the semi-final had set his team on their way to the play-off final.

Mickleover Sports included their potent strike force, Simeon Oshoboke and Karl Demidh, both of whom have caused the Nailers problems in the past.

The game began in frantic fashion as nerves took time to settle, with both sides looking primarily for a 'route one' approach.

But Sports began to get into the groove after the early stages, dominating possession throughout the first half.

However, it was the Nailers who had the first chance of the game as James Cullingworth's quick free kick down the touchline found the unmarked Aaron Cole who cut inside to strike a fierce shot which flew straight into Chris Martin’s hands.

Cole was at it again, although in rather bizarre fashion when his high clearance took an awkward bounce inside the penalty area, making Chris Martin backpedal and tip the ball over the bar.

Sports had their first half chance after 36 minutes when as a strike from Chris Palmer from the edge of the box was blocked well by Steve Warne.

Both sides had defended well throughout the first half, and openings were few and far between.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the first with Sports dominating the possession and the Nailers back line standing firm.

The Nailers produced a clearest opportunity on the 50th minute when a flick on by Mark Ward set up Colin Marrison for a cross that looped over the head of Dwayne Wiley, but Aaron Cole’s half volley fizzed a yard over the bar.

But the best chance of the game for Mickleover came on the hour mark as Sean Kinsella found space in the right hand side and began to drive at the Nailers defence before looking up and smashing a brilliant effort from 25 yards that cannoned off the crossbar.

With extra-time looking possible, the Nailers produced the game’s golden moment in the 75th minute.

Aaron Cole won a free kick on the right from deep, which he whipped in towards the six yard box with pace.

Phil Watt rose above his defender to head the ball down towards the far post, which Martin tipped away superbly, but only into the path of Marrison who poked the ball back into the centre, where Phil Watt had a second bite at the cherry to stab the ball home from close range, and send the Nailers into dreamland.

Sports continued to push forward in the closing stages but the Nailers refused to buckle.

A late chance for Dwayne Wiley went begging when his weak shot from inside the area fell straight into the arms of Low.
