The Nailers produced a spirited comeback against Coalville Town and earned a deserved replay at Owen Street on Tuesday night, writes Joe Malone.

A hugely disappointing first half at the Marston’s Stadium saw the Nailers trail by three goals at the interval, before a lively second half display produced three Belper goals to level the game at 3-3.

Manager Peter Duffield made more changes in the game with Matt Varley earning his first start at centre half, and Aaron Pride, Scott Low, Billy Bennett, Regan Edridge and Evan Garnett all joining the former in the opening line-up.

The first goal of the game came for the Ravens after a corner from the right hand side was whipped in with pace by Daniel Edwards. The ball came off the foot of the defender and fell nicely into the path of Liam Kay who sweetly struck the ball past Scott Low.

Two goals in as many minutes for Coalville on the stroke of half time summed up a disastrous forty five minutes for the home side, and left the Nailers with a mountain to climb.

The first of the two goals came in the 44th minute when Ravens ‘keeper Sean Bowles sent an accurate goal kick to the dangerous Alex Dean who took a neat touch which left Belper exposed.

A neat one-two with Lee Miveld saw Dean make ground down the right hand side and delivered a good low cross across the face of the goal where Stuart McNaught stole in front of a defender to stab the ball home.

A minute later, a misjudged bounce of the ball led to Jake Woolley finding a way through on the left hand side to stretch Belper once again. Woolley then twisted to cut back onto his right foot, and played the ball across the area for Alex Dean who arrowed the ball into the top corner.

The Nailers required a reaction in the second half, and how they got one with a new burst of energy that was clearly absent in the later stages of the opening half.

The Nailers opening goal came in the 53rd minute through Kieran Wells. An Ian Ross corner swung into the penalty area where goalkeeper Sean Bowles dropped the ball and Kieran Wells hooked the ball just inside the angle of crossbar and post despite a defender’s best efforts to keep it out.

A second Belper goal arrived just one minute later as the momentum starting to flow. Evan Garnett found a way in on the right hand side and held the ball up well to make space for himself before playing the ball into the box where Mark Ward’s effort on goal fell for the unmarked Regan Edridge at the back post who slid ball home.

Belper’s comeback was complete after 65 minutes with the goal of the day from Mark Ward.

A defensive clearance found Billy Bennett who took a great first touch to bring the ball down and then curled in a sweet cross to the centre of the box where the ball fell perfectly for Ward who smashed home a half volley in tremendous style.

Further efforts came for Garnett and Wells as the home side looked to progress to the next round, however the score remained at 3-3, ensuring a replay on Tuesday night.
