Hednesford Town, currently occupying 6th place in the Evo-Stik Premier Division, were firm favourites to succeed against Charlie Palmer’s side.

Despite being underdogs, the Nailers took the lead just 14 minutes in. Jonathan Williams put in a perfect cross from the left hand side for Ruben Wiggins-Thomas to head it into the bottom right hand corner of the goal and beyond the reach of goalkeeper, Dan Crane.

Hednesford almost levelled the score just a minute later. Latching onto a cross from the left, Joel Logan’s shot seemed destined for the back of the net, but Kyle Bryant seemed to appear from out of nowhere to clear the ball off of the line.

The home side created another opportunity to equalise not long after. A mazy run from George Carline saw him breeze through the Belper Town defence but having done the hard part, his shot sailed over the crossbar.

These missed chances, along with a number of misplaced passes began to frustrate the players and the home support..

The Nailers had a couple of attacks themselves, playing some good passing football and keeping the ball well without really troubling the goalkeeper.

Belper took their lead into half time as Phil Watt and Gerome Palmer kept on top of the home forwards, who also struggled to make an impression.

Into the second period, the Nailers defence continued to withstand the increasing Hednesford pressure, with Gerome Palmer making a fantastic last ditch block to keep the Pitmen out.

Charlie Gatter came onto the field 11 minutes into the second half for the injured Jonathan Williams and solidified the Belper Town defence, taking John Guy's position at left back as he pushed into a midfield slot..

This move paid off handsomely when Jermaine Hollis flighted in a free kick into the penalty area. Ruben Wiggins-Thomas headed it back across the area and John Guy came flying in with a spectacular diving header to double the lead for the Nailers.

Wiggins-Thomas then had a great chance to put the tie well beyond the Pitmen when he turned past his marker in the box but his shot was brilliantly blocked by the 'keeper.

The lead was reduced just four minutes later, when a superb run and shot from full back Cohen Bramall set up a tense ending to the game.

With the fourth official signalling a minimum of 5 minutes added time, the Nailers continued to defend in depth to preserve their famous victory.
