A Jon Froggatt hat trick gave new manager Peter Duffield his first victory as the Nailers progressed to the next round of the League Cup at the expense of Carlton Town.

Only four days after losing a league fixture at the Bill Stokeld Stadium to a hotly contested penalty very late in the game, the Nailers were back to try again, but this time in a cup tie.

Andy Richmond was back in goal after returning from holiday, while new signing Scott Ellis from Goole, came in to replace Deon Meikle who was suffering a knee injury.

On the bench, Olly Graham had his first involvement since the start of the season and Luke Chambers was also named as a substitute after returning to the club from Mickleover Sports.

The Nailers were boosted by the appearance of Jon Froggatt (pictured) who made a significant contribution to the tie, and left the new management team in no doubt as to the importance of retaining the former assistant manager’s services.

Carlton have to be one of the best footballing sides that the Nailers have faced this season, and their quick movement and accurate passing kept the Belper on their toes all evening.

For the first ten minutes or so they were forced to contain a buoyant Millers outfit and Andy Richmond had been grateful to see at least two efforts zip just wide of the target.

Scott Ellis put over a dangerous cross in the 10th minute to register Belper’s first appearance in the opposition penalty area, but Richmond was brought into action when Ashley Grayson tested him two minutes later.

The Nailers had gradually worked their way into the game and in the 22nd minute they broke away with the ball finding Andy Rushbury on the left, and he picked out Lee Morris with an early cross, and the former Matlock Town striker powered a great header just inside the post to give the Nailers a confidence boosting lead.

Jon Froggatt came close to making it 2-0 when he cut inside on 24 minutes only to see Danny Marshall smother his effort, and soon afterwards the Belper striker created an even better opportunity after latching on to the ball inside the penalty area, and taking it past the ‘keeper only to scuff his shot and for it to be cleared off the line.

But Froggatt had more success in the 36th minute when he reached a long clearance ahead of the Miller’ defenders and this time hit a measured lob over the advancing ‘keeper to give the Nailers a half time cushion.

At no time had Carlton looked out of this tie, and the second half saw the Nottinghamshire side press forward harder then ever.

In the 47th minute Jermain Hollis linked up with Daniel Fletcher and the Carlton substitute, introduced at half time hit, his shot straight at Richmond.

Andy Rushbury was unlucky with a well struck volley in the 48th minute that was beaten away, and Alan O’Hare went close with a header from a corner kick 5 minutes later.

Lee Morris struck a fine effort on the turn that Marshall pushed over brilliantly, and Belper’s inability to get a third goal was beginning to look more worrying as Carlton gradually began to wear the Nailers down.

Robert Gill sent Richmond sprawling to save a great effort on 60 minutes and this seemed to inject belief into the home side although Belper’s defending was resolute.

That is until the 86th minute when Ryan Goward made the break through for the Millers with a 20 yard shot that bounced over the outstretched hand of Richmond just inside the near post.

The pressure was on now and as the game entered added on time Belper lost concentration at a corner kick with Ashley Grayson gleefully heading in unchallenged.

The Nailers looked a spent side at this stage but somehow they summoned reserves of energy and surprised their hosts with their renewed vigour in extra time, and when Jon Froggatt scored with a shot on the turn in the 102nd minute, it was Carlton who suddenly looked leg weary.

The second period saw the Millers throw caution to the wind and it came as no surprise when Belper wrapped things up with 7 minutes to go when Ben Spargo’s perfectly timed forward pass presented Froggatt with the opportunity to claim his hat trick and secure the Nailers' passage into the next round.
