Belper Town’s interest in the Doodson Sport League Cup ended with defeat against Premier Division side Worksop after extra time.

The Tigers’ line up included a couple of former Nailers players in Danny Davidson and Gavin Allott, while the Belper side had a much changed look about it with Jamie Smith, Greg Wright, Luke Fedorenko, Jordan Turner and Joaquin Ortuno in the starting line up.

Worksop made an instant impact on the game by scoring the opening goal after only 3 minutes when Sam Duncum weaved his way into the penalty area and drilled the ball in at the near post.

They went close to getting a second in the 7th minute when Luke Sharry’s left foot strike cannoned off the upright with Andy Richmond left rooted to the spot.

However the Nailers put together an impressive move in the 17th minute culminating in Jon Froggatt’s curling ground shot that shaved the foot of the post and then moments later Jamie Smith fed the ball through to Luke Fedorenko and his swerving shot hit the side netting.

This had been a much better spell from Belper who had looked as though they might be overrun when the game started, and in the 28th minute they deservedly drew level when Jamie Smith put Jordan Turner (picrured) in possession and after checking back, he finished well with a low shot into the net.

Worksop nearly regained the lead on 35 minutes but Andy Richmond thwarted Danny Davidson’s near post flick with a good save, however at this stage of the game there was very little being generated by either team.

The Nailers nearly made an immediate impact at the start of the second half when Luke Fedorenko supplied a short cross to Jamie Smith who clipped the cross bar with a first time effort.

Jon Froggatt wasn’t too far away with a snap shot from just inside the area but the Tigers had regained some of their poise and passing skills and the Nailers had to be vigilant in defence.

A rash tackle by Marc Roberts on Luke Fedorenko on 58 minutes resulted in the visitors going down to ten men when the referee, who endured a wretched game throughout, surprisingly brandished a red card at the Worksop defender and suddenly the Nailers had a numerical advantage.

As is often the case the team with only 10 men work that little bit harder to make up for their missing team mate, and in terms of possession there was very little difference between the two sides.

The Nailers had one or two half chances with Jon Froggatt coming closest with a sweeping left foot shot that shaved the upright, and Sam Duncum created a presentable opportunity for Gavin Allott, but long before the end of the normal 90 minutes it appeared that both teams were happy to go into extra time.

Another poor refereeing decision handed the Tigers a great opportunity to take a decisive lead and there couldn’t have been many people in the ground who thought that Richard Adams’ seemingly perfectly timed tackle on Jamie Jackson could possibly be construed as a penalty.

But referee Danny Gratton had no hesitation in pointing the spot and Owain Warlow put the Tigers ahead in the 97th minute.

Jamie Jackson came close to getting the third goal on 100 minutes but Andy Richmond produced a fine save to keep the Nailers in with a shout, as Belper were stretched at the back in the final stages.

Having used all of their substitutes, Belper also went down to ten men after Jon Froggatt succumbed to a shoulder injury.

Belper’s exit from the competition was sealed three minutes from the end of extra time when Jackson scored despite appearing to be well offside in the move leading up to him netting, another example of the bizarre officiating at this game.
