The Nailers took an early lead after eight minutes through midfielder Michael Towey, who collected a clipped through ball from Evan Garnett and finished across the goalkeeper into the bottom corner.

Belper dominated the early action and created a number of excellent scoring opportunities only to be let down by wayward finishing.

But Evan Garnett did everything right as he weaved his way into the penalty area only to see his shot cannon back off the crossbar with the goalkeeper well beaten

Jordan Cole equalised for Castle from the penalty spot five minutes before half-time, the referee awarding the spot kick after Neville Thompson drove into the box before falling under a challenge from Belper centre-half Phil Watt.

But Belper started the second half on fire, scoring two goals within six minutes of the restart.

Evan Garnett got himself on the score sheet when he cheekily back-heeled under ‘keeper Daniel Read, with the visiting defenders appealing in vain for an offside decision.

His strike partner Grant Ryan then showed great vision to loop in a volley from 30 yards out to give the Nailers some breathing space.

A few Newcastle players were probably aggrieved that Ryan was still on the pitch after he was only booked for rash tackle earlier in the game, although their frustrations were eased as the visitors came back into the game, scoring two goals in the space of a few minutes just after the hour mark.

Neville Thompson who started the game on the bench, came on after half-an-hour to replace the injured Aaron Carter.

He got Castle’s second of the game, slotting in from the left hand side of the box after he had collected the ball from a lucky ricochet.

Thompson again caused the Nailers problems down the left as he played a neat one-two with left-back Cohen Bramall, who drove into the box and pulled the ball back to Thomas France who slotted it home.

Belper had a couple of chances in the latter stages of the game but could not take advantage to take all three points, Garnett had the chance to add to his solitary goal but was thwarted as he tried to round ‘keeper Read.

Nailers left-back Scott Matthews curled a lovely free-kick towards the top corner but again Read was there to ensure his side went home with a point.
