The game started after a minutes silence was impeccably observed for the late Richard Boot, a regular for many years at The Marston’s Stadium who sadly passed away in the week.
A strong away following contributed to the largest attendance at The Marston’s Stadium so far this season, a bumper crowd of 358 saw David Kolodynski score a first-half brace to seal a comfortable victory for the away side.
Rugby opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark, the impressive Kevin Thornton slipped through top-scorer Kolodynski who emphatically finished across Danny Haystead in the Nailers goal.
Kolodynski took advantage of some hesitant Belper defending too double his, and the Valley’s lead five minutes later, the Nailers defence failed to clear the ball and he expertly volleyed home with his left foot.
The game was won and lost in the first-half with the away side killing the game off in an accomplished fashion in the second period.
It was an important win for the Valley who started the day one place and one point above Charlie Palmer’s side in the Evo-Stik Division One South, it takes their unbeaten run to eight games whilst the Nailers drop to 16th following two consecutive defeats.
Haystead brilliantly denied Kolodynski a first-half hat-trick, more suspect defending from the Nailers allowed the forward to run clean through on goal but the Nailers ‘keeper got down low to keep his side in the game.
Nailer’s boss Palmer took action at going 2-0 down, bringing on Kyle Bryant for Tyrell Shannon-Lewis five minutes before the half-time break.
He made another change at half-time to try and turn the game in Belper’s favour, Michael Armstrong replaced Sam Wood to make his Nailers debut whilst Wood’s first start in a Belper shirt only lasted 45 minutes.
Alex Steadman had Belper’s only real chance to get back into the game in the second-half, he sprung the offside trap as he raced onto Bryant’s through ball but was denied by Sam Andrew in the Valley’s goal.
