Belper Town win final home game of the season against Market Drayton Town

By Steve Sharman

A goal in either half meant Belper Town finished their home campaign with victory against Market Drayton Town.

An early Bradley Wells finish in the first half and a goal in stoppage time from Alex Steadman meant the Nailers ended the week with two wins.

With Phil Watt suspended, Charlie Palmer kept faith with Jack O’Brien and Ross Parker in defence after their clean sheet in the midweek win over Leek Town.

The game started with Belper dominant and Steadman went close early on as he headed over, after a Louis Keenan corner had found the frontman.

Palmer’s side had plenty of possession in the opening stages as the visitors struggled to get into the game.

The possession eventually paid dividends on 17 minutes as Wells wriggled past two Drayton defenders in the box before firing low under Ash Rawlins to make it three goals for the forward this season.

Jonathan Williams was next to go close for the hosts after seeing his low shot from Eric Graves’ pass take a slight deflection and clip the outside of the post.

Six minutes later Parker had the Nailers’ next chance to double the lead but his diving header was easily gathered by Rawlins after a good right wing cross from Michael Armstrong.

Belper started the second period as they had ended the first as Rob Stevenson was denied a goal by Rawlins who made a fine save to tip the winger’s curling effort around the post.

The visitors started coming into the game after the break as James O’Neill was denied by Parker, who did well to block the forward’s effort after Cohen Bramall had broke down the left and found his team mate in the box.

Josh Green then perhaps should have done better for Drayton as the midfielder was left free in the box, but was unable to convert from close range leaving O’Brien the chance to clear his lines.

This was as good as it got for Drayton who came under pressure once again as Williams fired just over after driving into the box, before Steadman was denied a goal after Mike O’Reilly cleared the striker’s effort off the line.

With four minutes of time added on at the end of the game, Drayton keeper Rawlins headed wide of the goal after coming up for a corner deep into stoppage time.

But Rawlins was picking the ball out of his net soon after as Steadman was played in by Williams leaving the striker to fire in from close range, netting his 19th goal of the season and securing all three points.

The Nailers are next in action this Tuesday away at Daventry Town (7.45pm), before travelling to Stocksbridge for their final league game of the season next Saturday afternoon (3pm KO).
