Belper Town's unbeaten run of five games came to an abrupt end with the visit of Frickley Athletic who hit six goals without reply and consolidated their play off ambitions, writes Nigel Oldrini

The Nailers welcomed back Jake Carlisle to the starting line up after serving a one game suspension while Sam Birks was in for the injured Alex Steadman. Haydn Goddard was named as a substitute having not fully recovered from and injury sustained at Romulus last weekend.

The first 10 minutes or so gave little indication as what was to come, and the Nailers had half a chance to take the lead on 5 minutes when Sam Birks nearly capitalised on a poor back pass, but Daniel Burns got back quickly to deny the young striker a shooting opportunity.

Top scorer Jacob Hazel headed the Blues in front on 14 minutes and so began the unraveling of Belper's confidence that their previous unbeaten run had given them.

Two minutes later the visitors had scored their second of the afternoon when Daniel Burns headed a corner kick well beyond Joe Searson-Smithard in the Belper goal.

Frickley skipper Jameel Ible put a header wide of the target from a Tyler Walton cross on 28 minutes and soon afterwards they had the three points in their pockets when Jacob Hazel swept home a Ben Algar pass from the left.

Joe Searson-Smithard made a great save from Hazel's swerving free kick taken from the edge of the area in the 35th minute and the Nailers survived two more close shaves before the break with Reece McGinlay shooting just wide and Hazel just missing out on his hat trick with a header against the bar.

Any hopes Belper might have had to stage a second half recovery were dashed in the 53rd minute when former Nailers' player Nicky Darker nudged the ball over the line after Daniel Burns had headed a far post cross towards goal.

Further misfortune hit Belper on 65 minutes when Jake Carlisle had to be helped off the field after sustaining an injury.

As a result of this, Jake McIntosh came on for his debut for the remaining 25 minutes and replaced Carlisle in the centre of defence. He can be pleased with his first outing at semi-pro level even though the circumstances of his first appearance were hardly ideal.

Frickley were in control of the game at this stage and it came as no surprise when Jacob Hazel completed his hat trick when he drilled a 15 yard effort into the net with Joe Searson-Smithard having no chance to save it.

Belper's only shot on target came in the 74th minute when a poor pass gave Cameron Steele the opportunity to advance on goal but his shot went directly to Jake Turner in the Blues' goal.

Frickley left their best goal until last.

Thomas Dugdale will be forever grateful that his superb over head kick was captured on video as the ball flew across goal and in off the far post. It was an excellent strike and one that marked the difference in class of the two teams.

The Nailers now have to pick themselves up in readiness for the remaining five games of the season.
