Nailers maintain rich vein of form

Belper Town’s rich run of form continued as they won their sixth game from the last eight as they comfortably disposed of play-off hopefuls Loughborough Dynamo at Christchurch Meadow.

Mark Ward fires home from close range as Greg Wright's cross defeats the Dynamo defence

The Nailers named an unchanged team following the previous Saturday’s impressive victory at Leek Town, which meant no place for Aaron Pride who was available again after serving a three-match suspension.

Aaron Chapman made his home debut in goal after making his first appearance a few days earlier at Harrison Park, and Dynamo arrived at Christchurch Meadow having risen to the fringes of the play off places in recent weeks.

The game started at a quick pace with both sides trying to settle into a rhythm although the Nailers were looking sharp after their confidence boosting win at the weekend.

After a period of very little goal mouth action the Nailers took the lead in the 15th minute with an incisive move started by Chris Adam who charged forward before releasing the ball to the over lapping Greg Wright; and Mark Ward was on the end of his cross to steer it home from close in.

The Nailers continued to force the pace and didn’t allow Dynamo to settle on the ball and in the 31st minute the Nailers were handed a second goal virtually on a plate, when Adam Wykes attempted a back pass without spotting that Mark Ward was in between the last defender and the goalkeeper, and the Belper striker still had work to do before placing his shot wide of the ‘keeper into the net.

Richard Adams jumped to nod a Chris Adam free kick just wide in the 34th minute, but two minutes later Belper scored that all important third goal when Jon Froggatt latched onto another ill-judged back pass from Shaun Richards and ran on to slot the ball past the onrushing ‘keeper.

Jon Froggatt showed good ball control skills in the 41st minute but hit a disappointing shot well wide of the target, however it was all Belper at this stage with Dynamo barely having a look in.

Just on the stroke of half time Loughborough won a free kick a couple of yards from the edge of the penalty area but Adam Wykes sent his shot wide of the near post, and it was as near as the visitors had come to forcing a save out of Aaron Chapman.

Belper started the second half with the same tempo that they concluded the first and kept the visitors penned in their own half.

Dynamo made two quick substitutions after only six minutes of the second period in an attempt to inject some urgency into what otherwise been a surprisingly lacklustre display from the Leicestershire club.

Andy Rushbury put an intelligent ball into Jon Froggatt in the 58th minute and as the Belper striker closed in to shoot, a Dynamo defender got an important deflection to avoid the ‘keeper having to make a save.

Richard Adams got the ball in the net moments later but celebrations were quickly cut short when the referee’s assistant spotted an offside, despite the ball skimming off the head of a Dynamo defender on the way through.

Jon Froggatt put a half chance into the side netting in the 62nd minute as the Nailers looked strong favourites to add to their total, and Glyn Cotton should have found the target when Belper broke away five minutes later.

Loughborough’s Adam Wakes hit a good shot from 25 yards that Aaron Chapman covered easily, however this heralded the visitor’s best spell in which they enjoyed more possession.

Luke Edwards moved forward to unleash a low drive just past the post but the visitors’ late injection of urgency earned them a goal in the 79th minute when Adam Wykes capitalised after Aaron Chapman had parried a strong shot to fire home from close range.

Glyn Cotton could have wrapped things up deep into added on time when he ran clear with only the ‘keeper to beat, but Kahil Mann-Kler did well to deny him the opportunity.

This was a comfortable victory for the Nailers who dominated most of the game and won with plenty to spare.
