Fed's late strike salvages a point

Luke Fedorenko (pictured) salvaged a point for Belper Town against play off rivals Glapwell although the Nailers could have snatched victory in the final moments.

The Nailers returned to league action following their President’s Cup semi final victory at Skelmersdale the previous Saturday and there were two changes to the starting line up.

Jon Froggatt, who was ineligible for the Skelmersdale match, came in for Luke Fedorenko while Richard Adams started ahead of Mark Barnard who dropped to substitute.

Former Nailers’ skipper and fans favourite Steve Kennedy was in Glapwell’s starting line up as Belper looked for all three points to keep their play off hopes alive.

Tom Naylor almost fooled Andy Richmond with a speculative effort from 25 yards that drifted just wide, but the opening minutes were scrappy with little pattern to the play.

Lee Stevenson caused Richmond problems in the 15th minute with a fiercely struck free kick that bounced out of his arms but fortunately for Glapwell it fell to a defender who made the clearance.

Glapwell had a sniff of a chance in the 28th minute when Adam Walker headed a cross from the right just past the post, but despite this it was the Nailers who were making most of the running.

However it was the visitors who took the lead in the 35th minute when Damien Magee crossed from the left and picked out the unmarked Ricky Hanson who volleyed the ball in almost at his leisure.

The Nailers were nearly two down a minute later when Ollie Ryan’s back pass was cut out by Adam Walker and the Glapwell striker missed a golden opportunity to make it 2-0.

Micky Harcourt over hit a free kick in the opening moments of the second half as the Nailers set off in search of an early equaliser but they were resorting to too many long balls that were being swallowed up by the Glapwell defence.

The visitors looked dangerous again in the 57th minute but Adam Walker mis-kicked from 8 yards out and the ball ran harmlessly out of play.

Dean Oliver came on in place of Lee Stevenson and shortly afterwards Luke Fedorenko was introduced to try and inject some new ideas into the Belper attack.

Jon Froggatt’s shot in the 75th minute broke an 18 minute stalemate devoid of goal mouth incident but his effort was well wide of the target.

Moments later Anthony Wilson had a close range header pushed wide and from the resulting corner kick Glapwell had a minor panic before getting the ball away.

Ryan Hindley was inches away from scoring with an 82nd minute free kick as the Nailers finally managed to make an impact in the closing stages.

There was relief for the Nailers in the 86th minute when Luke Fedorenko drilled home the equaliser from a cross from Ollie Ryan and he might have scored again moments later when Ryan Hindley’s 87th minute cross eluded the diving Dean Oliver, but Fedorenko blasted the opportunity wide.

Jon Froggatt had the crowd on their feet in added-on time with a back header that trickled past the outside of the post, then the referee called time on a game that ended with just about the right result.
