Late goals needed before points secured

Belper Town eventually won this game comfortably enough but needed two late goals to be certain of the points.

The Nailers included Krystof Kotylo in midfield from the start after he made a surprise return to Belper Town in the mid week Derbyshire Senior Cup semi final win over Ilkeston Town.

While Jordan Hall was playing his final game for the Nailers before returning to Alfreton Town, news had filtered through that Belper’s other loan signing Ollie Ryan would be staying at Christchurch Meadow until the end of March.

Anthony Wilson who made a brief substitute appearance at the New Manor Ground after recovering from a broken jaw last Tuesday, only made the bench again on Saturday.

Lee Stevenson had the first shot on target inside the first minute, and seconds later Mickey Harcourt did well to get the ball over to Jon Froggatt (pictured) who headed wide at the near post.

But the Nailers got the early goal they needed in the 10th minute when Jordan Hall hooked the ball over from the bye line and Lee Stevenson’s glancing header went in off the far post.

Adam Ogden had to be alert in the 15th minute when Tom Rogers sneaked past the offside trap and almost got to the ball first, but the Belper ‘keeper made certain by going in feet first.

Not a great deal had been seen of the Market Drayton attack but in the 24th minute Rogers won the chase for the ball, however Ogden got down well to stop the shot.

Jon Froggatt caused problems for Steve Taylor with a header from a corner kick moments later, but the Nailers squandered a great opportunity on 27 minutes when Froggatt nudged the ball into the path of Lee Stevenson and with just the ‘keeper to beat he contrived to steer his shot wide of the upright.

Market Drayton began to get in the game more in the latter stages of the half, forcing the Nailers into errors, and for a while they lost control of the game as the visitors pressed forward.

Marc Stallard volleyed wide after a 42nd minute free kick fell to him at the near post but just as the Nailers looked to be getting to the half time with their lead intact, the visitors equalised when Martyn Davies tucked the ball away after Belper had failed to deal with a cross from the right.

The Nailers needed to get back in their stride quickly after the break but they continued to find it difficult to make progress

Ollie Ryan was blatantly tripped as he looked set to run through in the 53rd minute with Marc Stallard duly yellow carded, and Ryan managed to get the ball over from the bye line moments later, but there was no one there to take advantage.

Tom Rogers forced Ogden into a good one handed save in the 56th minute as Market Drayton looked threatening, but the Nailers regained their advantage in the 61st minute when Jon Froggatt collected Ollie Ryan’s through pass and went on to slide the ball coolly past Steve Taylor.

The Nailers were boosted when Gary Anslow was sent off after receiving a second yellow card but recent history showed that Belper rarely made the most of having a numerical advantage.

Lee Stevenson was denied his 28th goal of the season when Paul McMullen kicked his point blank shot off the line, and he repeated the feat two minutes later when Jon Froggatt’s effort had looked destined for the far corner.

Ollie Ryan missed a sitter in the 73rd minute after he scooped over Luke Fedorenko’s cross from six yards and by now the Nailers should have been comfortably home and dry.

Stallard nearly punished Belper in the 78th minute after getting up to a free kick at the far post and Adam Ogden had to be agile enough to push the ball away.

However Belper’s frustration was relieved in the 85th minute when Jon Froggatt put the ball in the net from close range from Ollie Ryan’s cross into the six yard area.

Tom Naylor was thwarted twice as the Nailers broke away two minutes later but he just couldn’t force the ball into the net, and Ryan couldn’t divert another effort on target.

With Market Drayton at sixes and sevens the Nailers struck a fourth goal in added on time when Lee Stevenson made sure from close in as he met Luke Fedorenko’s cross.

In the end the score line reflected Belper’s dominance of the second half and the victory kept them well positioned just behind the league leaders.
