Ravens too hot to handle

A frantic game between the two teams saw six goals scored over the 90 minutes. Neither side played particularly neat football but the energy and passion exerted from both made it an entertaining match (writes Joe Malone)

The game began in bittersweet fashion for the Ravens who scored with their first attack after just two minutes, only to be cancelled about by an equalising goal for the Nailers just two minutes later.

Coalville’s first goal came when the ball found its way to Callum Woodward on the right hand side of the area after good work in the middle of the park. Woodward swung his cross in for the oncoming Jamie McAteer to steer his header into the top right corner beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.

The Nailers found an instant reply from a dead ball situation, when Jon Froggatt’s free kick twenty yards left of centre, found its way perfectly into the top corner despite Chris Gibson getting a touch to the ball.

The Nailers number 9 has started the season in good goal scoring form with his third goal in two games.

The Nailers then had their best spell of the game, looking the better side with more urgency and invention deep inside the Coalville half.

Belper’s pressure didn’t pay off as Coalville took the lead for the second time 20 minutes in against the run of play, when Woodward’s cross was guided on by the head of McAteer to Kevin Charley who finished off a good set piece move.

The Ravens goal seemed to halt the momentum of Belper and put them on the back foot.

As the Ravens went on to score a third goal which came 12 minutes after their second, Kevin Charley again the goal scorer with his second headed goal.

Scott Low collected a cross under the pressure of Charley, whose persistence paid off when Low dropped the ball for the Ravens striker to place the ball into an empty net.

The game was put beyond the Nailers reach in the 55th minute when another Callum Woodward cross was headed in by substitute Liam Crouchman.

Woodward’s delivery had been a problem throughout the game for the Nailers, proving to be the difference overall on the night.

Scott Low then made up for his earlier error by pulling off a string of fine saves to ensure that the Nailers wouldn’t concede a fifth.

Belper were awarded a consolation when Shaun Tuton was brought down in the area into added time. Glyn Cotton stepped up in the absence of the substituted Froggatt to slot his penalty into the bottom right corner.

This was a tough test for the Nailers in their first away game of the season, but their commitment levels would have been perhaps the only positive for the manager.
