The Nailers moved into sixth place in the league table after a resounding four-goal victory over Kidsgrove Athletic at Christchurch Meadow, writes Joe Malone.

Goals for Mark Ward, Jon Froggatt (2) and substitute, Kieran Wells ensured a comfortable afternoon for those in yellow.

There were three changes made by manager Peter Duffield as captain, Steve Warne and marksmen, Jon Froggatt and Mark Ward came back into the side.

Kieran Wells and Shaun Tuton who jointly led the attack in the midweek Doodson Sport Cup victory over Ilkeston could count themselves unfortunate to find themselves on the bench.

The first half hour produced little action with neither ‘keeper being put to the test after two efforts from Thomas Wakefield and a good strike from Shane Reaney were all off target for Kidsgrove.

Gareth Davies also created an opportunity for himself on the 29th minute when he won the ball back on the half way line and burst forward to open up the shot which blazed two yards over the bar.

The opening goal then came for Belper after 37 minutes after a foul on the edge of the box, left of centre, was awarded and Mark Ward confidently stepped up to curl a brilliant effort over the wall and into the near corner which grazed the inside of the post on its way past the despairing Danny Read.

The first goal sparked life into the match as the Nailers began to attack from all angles.

On 41 minutes Jon Froggatt slipped the ball through to Steve Warne who just got the touch before the onrushing ‘keeper, only to be ruled just offside.

The second half proved a joy to watch as the Nailers scored three more goals and dissected their opponents from the first whistle.

However before the onslaught, an effort from ‘Grove’s Michael Carr to the right edge of the area was sent across goal, only to fall two yards wide of the far post.

The Nailers doubled their lead after 49 minutes, and how they were deserving of it.

A great move began with the ball being played down the left channel for Ward to collect, Ward then turned back inside and opened up the angle to deliver a teasing cross which just evaded the head of the defender and Harrison brought the ball down superbly.

Harrison then dinked the ball over the ‘keeper across the six yard box for the unmarked Jon Froggatt to volley home.

Five minutes later, a sliced clearance by a ‘Grove defender let Froggatt in again, but the Belper striker could only to get minimal connection with the ball as it dropped and his shot nestled comfortably into Read’s arms.

Kidsgrove then had two good chances to being their side back into it.

Firstly an overhead kick by Karl Espley was hooked across goal from the right for Wakefield to head the ball towards the far corner, only for striker Mark Ward to be on the line doing his defensive duties to clear the ball off the line.

The second chance came directly from Ward’s clearance as the ball was played back up to the Nailers penalty box, and again Wakefield had the chance to score but could only hit a tame effort from the edge of the box straight at Dave Ratcliffe.

The game was then put beyond all doubt in the 66th minute.

A throw on the left hand side by Chris Adam was played to Ward, who held the ball well and played the return to Adam into the box whose first time drive across the six yard line was met by the unmarked Jon Froggatt for a second time to place into the back of the net.

Matt Haddrell later had a chance when the ball dropped nicely on the inside right and his powerful volley from 18 yards was driven towards the far post with pace, but Ratcliffe was equal to it making a good save.

Substitute Kieran Wells then got his fourth Nailers goal in a week after 81 minutes.

A Gareth Davies corner found Wells in the area and he powered his header downwards before it bounced into the top corner - with defender Luke Beatson following up to ensure that it found the back of the net.
