Adam's late double earns a point

A stunning comeback for the Nailers made a point feel like a victory, as Chris Adam came off the bench to strike in the 90th and 93rd minute to give the Nailers a share of the spoils, writes Joe Malone.

Manager Peter Duffield made changes as Phil Watt came back into defence alongside Shaun Roulston, Aaron Pride came in at right full back for the indisposed Chris Jones, whilst Kieran Wells, Colin Marrison and Sam Duncum also started.

The Nailers started the game on top with good possession and attacking intent, deep inside the Wrens half.

The first half chance came after three minutes when the impressive Cameron Stuart struck a half volley from 30 yards with good connection, only for his effort to go straight through to the goalkeeper.

Kieran Wells then had an opportunity on 9 minutes when a Stuart free kick from the right was whipped in for Wells to attack on the six yard box, but his headed effort sailed two yards over the bar.

The next couple of chances came for Rainworth as Scott Rickards free kick left of centre was sent curling wide of the near post.

A minute later, there was a mix up in the Nailers backline as ‘keeper Dave Ratcliffe hesitated to come for a loose ball and ex-Belper marksman Ashley Longstaff stabbed in to chip the ball agonisingly over the bar.

The first half was played out with both sides creating openings but without finding the net.

A Jon Froggatt free kick that struck the top of the crossbar, was perhaps the closest to breaking the deadlock

However, the second half produced four goals late on, as Rainworth looked to have the game wrapped up, until Peter Duffield’s substitutions proved to be decisive.

The first major talking point of the game came in the 59th minute as Simon Harrison was played through on goal and tripped inside the area by former Nailer Sam Purcicoe, only for the penalty appeal to be waved away by referee Dave Benton.

Substitute Mark Ward then had a goal disallowed as Aaron Pride struck a fierce effort from range on the right hand side, which was parried out by Martin for Mark Ward to drive the ball back into the net. However the linesman raised his flag for an offside decision, much to the Nailers fury.

To compound the Nailers disappointment Rainworth took the lead on the 73rd minute, just when it looked as if Belper’s pressure was beginning to pay off.

A corner from the left was looped into the six-yard box for Kieran Walker to rise and power a free header into the roof of the net.

The Nailers then looked to be out of the game when Ashley Longstaff’s impressive touch and turn onto his left foot on the edge of the area took him away from the defender to engineer half a yard of space.

His powerful drive drilled into the far right corner and despite Ratcliffe getting a fingertip to the ball, but it wasn’t enough to deny the Wrens doubling their lead in the 80th minute.

A huge turn of events in the game was then to occur, as a result of true character and determination by those in yellow, and Chris Adam turned out to be the Nailers latest hero.

The clock was ticking and the referee was judging the stoppage time allowance as the 89th minute was upon us.

Gareth Davies sent a long free kick into the penalty area, and the ball broke for Chris Adam and the Nailers substitute smashed in a brilliant first time half volley into the top corner to give the Nailers a late lifeline in the game.

Finally, in the third minute of added time, an almost identical situation with a long free kick from Davies was sent into the box.

Again the ball dropped for Chris Adam, this time on the left hand side, and his second half volley of the game was again drilled into the corner of net, to earn Belper Town an unlikely point.
