Nailers edge seven-goal thriller

A wonderful footballing spectacle, illuminated by seven goals between the two sides, saw Belper Town profit with all three points in a quite marvellous game, writes Joe Malone.

Coles Lane is home to the latest technology in football pitches as the two teams lined up on the impressive 3G surface.

Manager Peter Duffield fielded just one change to the team that drew away to Mickleover three days previous, with Chris Adam coming in for Gareth Davies, who started on the bench.

It didn’t take long for the goals to begin flowing for both sides, the first goal coming in the 8th minute for the Nailers.

Simon Harrison whipped in a corner from the right hand side which was glanced on by the head of Mark Ward as the ball sailed into the far corner, beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.

The lead didn’t last long as the Royals hit back with the equaliser just two minutes later on the 10th minute.

A throw-in was taken from the left, level with the penalty area, and the ball dropped kindly for the unmarked Joel Kettle to hit home the half volley into the far right corner to stun the static Nailers defence.

Any sign of the frantic start beginning to settle was shortly brushed away as the Nailers regained their lead on the 15th minute through the unlikely source of Dan White.

A Cameron Stuart free kick from the right hand side was drilled in towards the six yard box and stopped by the defender on the spot, only for the ball to fall for Dan White who fired home the half volley from eight yards out, to give the Nailers the lead once again, this time for the largest period of the first half.

The Royals got a timely equaliser with four minutes to go before the break with potentially the pick of the bunch from an array of goals throughout the game.

This time, a throw-in from the left hand side was launched in and defended well by Dan White as the defender rose well to head it up and out.

However, the ball fell for captain Mark Danks who brought the ball down well on his chest and smashed home a tremendous volley into the top corner, to give a share of the spoils at the break.

The second half began faster than the first with a goal just two minutes after the restart to give Sutton Coldfield their first lead in the game.

Mark Danks picked the ball up 30 yards from goal and began making his way forward. He then drove in a rather speculative shot from long range which found its way to Reece Leek on the edge of the box to make contact with the ball and steer it in to the bottom left corner beyond the reach of Scot Low who could only watch it deflect in.

The Nailers reacted well after going behind and their fast tempo football paid off once again following a wonderful footballing move in the 59th minute.

Chris Jones received the ball on the right hand side towards the touch line, his pass forward found Harrison. Harrison then began to tease the fullback with his usual jinking runs as he opened up some space for the cross which was glanced on by Mark Ward, only for Royals’ Joe Lyng to unfortunately head the ball into his own goal.

The final goal of the game came directly from the kick off just two minutes after the previous goal as a penalty kick decided the games fate.

Simon Harrison again tormented the fullback, this time turning inside and sprinting towards the penalty area, once teeing up the shot, the trailing leg of Harrison was taken by the boot of the defender and a penalty kick was rightly awarded.

There were to be no guesses as to who would step up to take the penalty as Jon Froggatt placed the ball on the spot. The number 9 began his usual measured run up to fire the ball home into the left hand corner beyond the reach of the goalkeeper, who had guessed correctly.

A quite stupendous game of football ended with the smiles belonging to those in yellow, although the performance of both sides will also have left Sutton Coldfield with a positive frame of mind after a wonderful show of goals proved to be great value for money for the ever cheering crowd.
