The Nailers got back to winning ways in fine style against the Vikings at Christchurch Meadow on Saturday afternoon, the team they beat by six goals to two in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, writes Joe Malone.

Gareth Davies came in to the centre of the midfield as Colin Marrison was played on the left, and Chris Adam filled in at left back in place for the absent Aaron Pride.

There were two ex-Nailers players at the heart of the Vikings defence in Karl Colley and Richard Adams, and the Nailers would ensure they were in for a difficult 90 minutes.

The game began at a slow tempo with Goole looking the stronger of the two teams as both sets of players looked to stalk each other’s movements.

However, the first goal came in the match at a critical time in the 26th minute and Belper Town were the beneficiaries.

The impressive Simon Harrison won possession on the right hand side towards the half way line and began to drive at the Vikings backline.

His run inside drew away Jon Froggatt and Mark Ward who drifted out to create the space for Simon Harrison, who took full advantage as he drove a left footed shot from the edge of the area which was cruelly deflected by the defender to loop agonisingly over the goalkeeper to give the Nailers the lead.

The goal served to spark Belper into life as their next goal came just sixty minutes later.

Again it was Harrison, who this time turned creator to beat the defender down the right and produce a cross from which Jon Froggatt’s diving header nestled just inside the post, to give the Nailers a platform to build from.

The creativity didn’t stop there as it took just five more minutes to score a third.

Once again the ever dangerous Simon Harrison got the assist, this time on free kick duty.

The dead ball was positioned 35 yards from goal to the left hand side and Harrison whipped in the cross low for Phil Watt to get a decisive touch and make it three goals in six minutes for the Nailers.

The second half saw Belper play some impressive football in front of their appreciative home fans.

Colin Marrison played a neat ball down the left hand side for Chris Adam who drove at the full back.

Adam then crossed the ball in which was headed away by Karl Colley, however Steve Warne kept the attack alive with a header back into the box for Froggatt, whose chest, turn and volley was stabbed just wide of the left post.

The Nailers were then served a warning on the 68th minute when James Cottingham played in a deep corner from the left which found its way to substitute Danny King Bisungu at the far post, who brought the ball down to fire the ball into the back of the net, and raise hope for the Vikings.

However, the reaction of the home side was first class as Belper ensured that the momentum stayed with them by playing neat football to relieve the pressure of the back four.

In the 84th minute, Mark Ward ensured the points would belong to the Nailers when he was played through on goal, only to attempt to square a pass to Kieran Wells which was cut out by the keeper, however the ball came back for Ward whose maintained his composure to fire the ball into the back of the empty net.

Kieran Wells then added to the party two minutes later when Mark Ward was again played in, this time down the right hand side. Ward curled in a low cross across the face of the goal for Kieran Wells to tap home and make it 11 goals for Belper against Goole AFC this season.
