The Nailers came from an early goal down to thrash Gresley FC on a rainy evening at Christchurch Meadow, writes Joe Malone.

Manager Peter Duffield made only one change to his side that demolished Goole AFC, with new signing James Cullingworth making his debut at left full back.

It took just five minutes for the game’s first goal to arrive, scored by the Moatmen as they looked to get a tight grip in difficult conditions.

A corner was played in from the right which dropped on the penalty spot for several players to attempt contact, as the ball found its way seemingly out of trouble towards the right hand side.

However, the Nailers couldn’t clear their lines and the ball found its way to ex-Belper winger Paulo Piliero who stabbed home from close range.

The Nailers response was first class and their fast football was complemented by a zippy surface and chances soon began falling their way.

The first came for the games outstanding player, Simon Harrison, who took his defender on cutting inside from the right and firing in a left footed drive which rose a foot over the bar.

After 25 minutes of testing football, the Nailers got their breakthrough.

Simon Harrison delivered a free kick from the left, 25 yards out which was played in at pace, and was helped on with a flick header by Jon Froggatt who directed the ball into the top left corner beyond the reach of on-loan Derby County goalkeeper Mats Morch.

Belper then went on to score two more goals in the space of five minutes, to emulate their first half against Goole AFC, by killing the game in quick fire time.

Their second goal came on the 27th minute when another Simon Harrison free kick led to a goal.

This time he took it from 35 yards out in a central position. Aiming for goal, his low drive was only pushed out by Morch into the path of Phil Watt who finished well from close range and turning the game on its head.

The Nailers didn’t stop there, and just three minutes later they scored their third goal to widen the gap between the two sides.

A third Simon Harrison free kick was delivered, this time from the left hand side. His cross was floated in towards the far post which Colin Marrison met to head back across goal and set up Mark Ward who fired in the third goal from six yards out.

Dominance was then with the home side and the Nailers began to play the ball around with confidence and pushing their opponents backwards.

Gresley did create two half chances towards the end of the first half through Kieran O’Connell and Sam Grice, both coming from a similar position on the right hand side of the area, however each resulting in the same outcome with fierce shots going wide of the near post.

Steve Warne had a snap shot from the edge of the box on 51 minutes, which was dragged just wide of the left hand post.

Simon Harrison then created a wonderful opportunity for himself as he appeared on the left hand side this time, cutting inside and driving a good effort towards the far post which was palmed away well by Morch.

Mark Ward then had a chance to double his tally with a neat free kick from just outside the area in a central position, which curled inches wide of the left hand post.

The final goal of the game was then scored and to the delight of the majority inside the stadium, it came for the Nailers with 11 minutes remaining.

Little could take the gloss off the performance of Harrison, however this goal came close.

Substitute Aaron Cole received the ball on the right hand side and squared up his defender. After a mix of step overs, Cole took his man on down the outside and fired in an unexpected shot from a tight angle, which drove across the face of the goal and found its way into the far bottom corner to cap off a tremendous performance by the Nailers.
