A 90th minute winner from a most unlikely source gave the Nailers an unexpected maximum points haul despite a lacklustre game, writes Joe Malone

Manager, Peter Duffield made two changes to the side that drew with Scarborough Athletic last week, with Scott Low replacing Dave Ratcliffe in goal, and Liam Davis starting ahead of the injured Chris Jones at full back.

On a cold and blustery day at Coles Lane, the game followed in the same vein as the dismal weather, with a distinct lack of quality throughout.

Neither side was able to take control nor able to produce any really memorable moments, however that wasn't through a lack of effort, as both sets of players ran their hearts out for their respective teams.

Belper had the first opportunity of the game after just three minutes.

Simon Harrison’s corner kick was played into the six-yard box where goalkeeper Lewis Exall punched the ball clear, only for Gareth Davies to blaze a volleyed effort a yard over the bar.

Apart from Davies' speculative effort, neither side were able to conjure up a decent opportunity in the first half hour, as both teams erred on the side of caution.

Simon Harrison produced a fine effort on the 30th minute which had the away supporters briefly dreaming of what might have been, but his shot flew well off target.

Dan White then played a long ball over the top that was headed down by Peter Folkes, and when the ball dropped for Harrison to take the ball in his stride, he fired in a sweetly struck shot from 25 yards just wide of the right hand post.

Roms produced their first chance of the game on the 33rd minute when a corner from the right was headed clear by Phil Watt and the ball sat up well for the advancing Terry Fleming, whose left-footed effort flew narrowly wide.

Tom Turton then took a corner from the left hand side from which Lee Smith powered in a header from the six yard box towards the top left corner, however James Cullingworth was positioned perfectly on the post to head the ball away to safety.

Any hopes that the second half would show an improvement on the first were quickly extinguished as a similar tempo endured for the remaining 45 minutes.

Simon Harrison saw another long-range shot go wide after Lee Smith put him under pressure to hit it early

Then Jon Froggatt also saw another long range free kick deflect off his own player to out-fox the goalkeeper, who could only stand and watch as the ball went agonisingly wide of the right hand post.

Mark Ward had a good opportunity on the 60th minute after a long ball was played up by Liam Davis for Jon Froggatt to head down into the path of Ward, who took a touch to steady himself and unleashed a decent effort which went just wide of the target.

Romulus ten had three good chances to take the lead in the space of as many minutes, the first coming on the 79th minute.

A free kick taken deep was headed out by Dan White, but the ball dropped nicely for Downes whose low driving effort went inches past the far left post as Scott Low could only stand and watch.

The best chance of the game for Roms then came in the shape of substitute James Reid, only for indecision from the substitute to remove the opportunity of a certain goal.

A long ball was played over the top for Reid to beat the offside trap. Scott Low came racing out but Reid was first to the ball, taking it around the Belper ‘keeper and giving himself a clear sight of goal.

However, the Romulus substitute decided to take another touch, which allowed Phil Watt the time to get back and make a superb last ditch tackle to keep his side in the game.

Direct from the resulting corner, another chance went begging for Romulus as Folkes glanced a header across the goal and wide of the left hand post.

However, it was the Nailers who went home cheering, as a goal in the 90th minute ensured that three more points were in the bag for the promotion chasing side.

James Cullingworth took a free kick, which was cut out by the first man but, at the second opportunity Cullingworth whipped in a glorious ball into the six yard box and through a crowd of players came Phil Watt to stab the ball home from four yards out and win the game for the Nailers.
