Belper Town suffered a hammer blow at Christchurch Meadow after Market Drayton took all three points to stall the Nailers promotion ambitions, write Joe Malone.

Manager, Peter Duffield was forced to make two changes to his defence, with Dan White and Luke Beatson both failing to recover from injuries.

Chris Jones switched from right fullback into central defence whilst Liam Davis started at left fullback.

The first chance of the game came after 8 minutes for Market Drayton when Elliot Ledwards played the ball over the top from deep, which was misjudged by defender Chris Jones. Mike O’Reilly had a clear run into the box but sliced his shot wide of the near left post.

The Nailers produced a good opportunity six minutes later when Simon Harrison played the ball into Mark Ward on the edge of the box. Ward then took a touch to set himself, and on his less-favourite left foot, swung a shot in to the near left post which ‘keeper Stevens got down well to save.

Liam Davis then played in a neat cross from the left hand side which was headed out by Blake. The ball then fell nicely for Steve Warne who chested the ball and struck on the half volley which flew just over the bar.

Jon Froggatt then had an effort cleared off the line when Simon Harrison played in a corner from the right towards the far post.

Colin Marrison headed the ball back across goal at the second attempt which Froggatt met and volleyed low towards the target, only for James Askey to block on the goal line and keep the scores level.

The final chance of the first half came again for Jon Froggatt when Mark Ward held the ball up well on the left hand side and played it back to Colin Marrison in space.

Marrison delivered the cross towards the penalty spot, which Froggatt came to meet with a headed effort, after good movement to get in front of his marker, only for the goalkeeper to save comfortably down to his right.

The second half saw Market Drayton take the lead after 52 minutes, with Phil Watt having deemed to head the ball into his own net.

A good cross was delivered by Bennett on the left, which came for Rob Stevenson on the far post to smash the ball towards goal. Phil Watt then made contact, turning the ball towards his goal, however Scot Low reacted well to knock the ball out, however the referee judged the ball to have crossed the line.

Later chances then came for the Nailers after 62 minutes in the shape of Kieran Wells and Jon Froggatt in the space of five minutes.

The first for Wells was a good header from eight yards after a Simon Harrison corner from the right, however the ball dropped inches wide.

Then, Jon Froggatt was played through on goal by Wells through the middle, who closed in on the outrushing Damien Stevens. Froggatt went sprawling as he tried to round the ‘keeper but referee Hutchinson waved the Belper appeals away and the red card decision was duly avoided.

New signing Joe Flint then had the best chance of the game with 3 minutes of normal time to go, when a cross from the right was delivered by Jones to be headed away by McMullen.

Steve Warne then flicked the ball back into the box and Joe Flint reacted well to smash in an instinctive volley, which produced a fine save by Stevens to tip over the bar.
