Belper Town’s terrific climb up the table continued after a sterling 1-1 draw with Morpeth Town, leaders of the pack, writes Nathaniel Kay.

We’ve got a good base now, a good group. Anybody who comes in has to be exceptionally better than who we’ve got on and off the pitch.
- Grant Black

Staring darkly at bottom of the table only seven weeks previous, Grant Black has transformed the club into genuine promotion pushers.

His side set another bench mark after containing the divisions dominators.

“Probably overriding emotion today is pride. Unbelievably proud of the lads,” he said, following a priceless point in a fixture they even fell behind in.

“We had a game plan, as we said when you interviewed me last week, it was to come and win a game of football.

Being the top converters in the league, Morpeth would have expected far more chances than Belper limited them to and grabbed their goal in extremely fortunate circumstances.

Jack Foalle found his flick sail over Leigh Overton following a Morpeth set piece; the effort deemed a miss hit.

Black even evaded to this, saying: “We said before we had a lot of possession and they’re dangerous from set pieces which is where they will score when they’re going to score.

“That was frustrating for us. So, we said to the lads at half time, we see that we are still in this game.

“The longer we stay in it will have a chance and if we do we have to make sure we take it.”

One chance was all that sufficed, as man of the moment George Milner directed a Craig Nelthorpe freekick into an unstoppable corner of the goal to level.

The Nailers took a hammering for the final quarter, which was probably the most rewarding aspect for Black and his boys.

He said, “We took it, they threw everything at us last 20 minutes. They were at home, top of the league unbeaten at home which there going to do.

“

The way the lads rallied together to keep them out from one to 16 the lads were unbelievable. I’m super proud of them.”

This was testament to Black’s brilliant job that he made bold changes prior to the game, however the togetherness of the squad allowed the alterations to click immediately.

“Alex plays up top which is his ideal position. But he’s gone in at centre half again and just steps straight into there,”Black mentioned, as Alex Peterson captained the side in replace of Danny South.

Cameron Hough made his debut for the club and played a pivotal part in Belper’s backline.

Black said: “He did really well, I said to Jacob Sturgess who’s played four games at right back and has done really well but we’ve got a strict thing on training.

“Jacob couldn’t make it, Cameron came in and trained really well.

“He’s come straight in and played 70 minutes, his first for quite a while.

“I thought he’s done really well. Defensively, not just as a back five, we are looking tough to break down, which is encouraging because we’ll always score goals with the strike force we’ve got.’
“

Very few around can match Belper’s current form record of nine unbeaten in the league, becoming the team to beat at the minute.

Regardless, Black remained realistic on the club’s ambitions.

“If we get beat doing everything we are doing, we don’t mind that.

“The mentality of the group is they can keep it going for as long as they want. The minute they switch off and don’t do what they’re doing is the minute that run stops.

“We’ve got a good base now, a good group. Anybody who comes in has to be exceptionally better than who we’ve got on and off the pitch.

“So, it will be difficult for anyone to come in, it’s a good run and we want to keep it going for as long as we can.’

All the players and staff wanted to dedicate the draw to Gavin Burgess of the Silver X Group following his recent illness.
