Immediately after kick off, Belper maintained possession in midfield with the defence of Emma Newton, Sarah Jackson, Olivia Pell and Helen Colwill stopping any penetration by the Buxton attackers.
Some good link up play with Sue Thornhill and Kelly Turner feeding Helen Tunnicliffe up front gave Belper some early runs on goal. Searching runs from Leah Parkin and Katie Harper troubled Buxton and Belper were unlucky not to score. As the game progressed, Buxton’s physical presence prevailed with some through balls on goal resulting in two tap ins from short range giving Belper’s goalkeeper Emma Vanam little chance.
Belper attempted to get back into the game but a lofted ball over the top just before half time gave a Buxton attacker an excellent strike on goal from distance. Belper went into half time three nil down even though they had the majority of the possession.
Tactical substitutions at half time bought Rachel Evans, Steph Elmore-Ault and Hannah Fern into the game. Their impact was immediate with Belper scrapping for every ball in midfield.
Belper’s dogged persistence prevailed with Jemma Wheatley causing a defensive mistake which resulted in her with a one on one with Buxton’s goalkeeper which she coolly slotted home to get Belper back in the game.
Buxton continued to fight for every ball with excellent saves from Emma Varnam making the last half hour a game that could go either way.
Belper's best chance was Katie Harper being put through after some slick passing resulting in a run on goal which was saved by the goalkeeper. Belper maintained the pressure with total commitment until the final whistle with a result that does not justify Belper’s commitment.
