Belper struggled to find their usuall tempo in a game which was their to be won.

Belper got the game under way but were slow out the blocks and it took 15 minutes to get into the usual passing game. A few good moves down the left instigated by K Harper resulted in a string of corners in which H Tunnicliffe was unlucky on a couple of occasions as she got on the end of them. St Georges did press forward and created chances, but the Belper defence was in a defiant mood clearing up any threats from the St Georges strike force

As the halftime neared, Tunnicliffe again went close as she was put clean through only to find the ‘Keeper’ stood up well to deny Belper the lead.

St Georges rallied in the last minutes before half time and E Varnam was forced into action saving well on 2 occasions before St Georges took the lead from a corner which Belper failed to clear out the box.
Belper had a few long range efforts in the final minutes of the half but failed to trouble the opposition keeper.

Half time Belper 0-1 St Georges

The second half was played mostly in midfield with neither team able to get a grip on the game. Both teams made changes which opened up the game.

Belper looked for an equaliser but the through balls from midfield just wouldn’t drop right and before long it was St Georges who found themselves with the upper hand as they forced a number of corners, and it was from one of these corners they scored a 2nd, as Belper thought they’d cleared the danger and pushed out a quick ball was put back in and found a St Gorges player unmarked in the box who placed the ball into the bottom corner.

With 10 minutes left to play Belper sparked into action and a good move down the right forced a Belper throw deep in the St Georges half. As the ball was thrown to Tunnicliffe she controlled well and struck it from the edge of the box, St Georges keeper failed to hold the effort and the ball ended up in the net, to put Belper back in the game.

This was to be the last bit of football as St Georges tactic to see the game out was to keep hoofing the ball out of play. Not the result Belper wanted but hopefully Belper will bounce back next week with a league cup game away at Hilton Harriers LFC
