African football boosted by generous Belper community

African football boosted by generous Belper community

David Laughlin23 Jun 2010 - 16:46

Belper Town Football Club has teamed up with Safer Neighbourhood police officers in Belper to support the 'Boots for Africa' campaign to encourage local children to donate their old football boots to disadvantaged people in Africa.

The Nailers have been working alongside the police, the UniBond Football League and Sheffield FC (the world's first football club), to collect boots in aid of African children and adults.

The national Boots for Africa campaign aims to send old football boots out to Africa to help develop the skills and fitness of young people, whilst also providing African people with a sense of hope, pride and ambition for themselves and their country.

David Laughlin, Belper Town Football Club Secretary said: "We would like to thank everyone who took part in this campaign and we have collected 129 pairs of boots, which are in addition to the 15 pairs that we collected at the McDonald's Football Festival held at Christchutch Meadow last August.

"This means that we have collected a total of 144 pairs of boots, which will be sent from the Belper community to young people in Africa so that they can enjoy playing football in the same way that children across Derbyshire do.

"We worked closely with the local Safer Neighbourhood policing team who have been into schools to promote the campaign, and it has been great to see the whole community joining together in support of this project."

Sergeant Richard Booth said: "With the World Cup currently taking place in South Africa this is a great opportunity to raise awareness of this fantastic charity and to encourage children to think about the conditions of poverty faced by many young people across the world.

"We would like to thank Belper Town Football Club for asking us to be a part of this fantastic project and also Ken Hair, local McDonald's franchisee, for his generous support throughout the campaign."

Lewis Spencer of St. Elizabeth's Roman Catholic Primary School collected the most boots during the campaign, he said: "I collected 14 pairs of football boots to give to the children in Africa.

"I was very happy to give these old boots away to the children and I hope that they enjoy playing football in them."

The schools who took part in the Boots for Africa campaign are:

St. Elizabeth's Roman Catholic Primary School
