Albans brings in Wedderburn

Albans brings in Wedderburn

David Laughlin4 Sep 2015 - 08:06

With Grant Ryan suspended for Belper Town's trip to Spalding United next week, Nailers boss Jimmy Albans has moved quickly to sign a new striker.

19-year-old forward Antonio Wedderburn (pictured) has been signed on loan from Ilkeston FC after Albans and his counterpart, Gavin Strachan had agreed the deal for the Robins Under 21 forward to join the Nailers.

Nottingham-born Wedderburn is primarily a striker but who can also play effectively on either flank. Reports suggest that he has got pace to burn and is equally adept shooting and crossing with either foot.

He was also the leading scorer for a number of Notts County junior teams throughout his early playing career.

Ryan will miss Belper's midweek fixture against Spalding United following his sending off against Coalville just over a week ago.

Turning his attention to the Nailers match at Leek Town tomorrow, Albans said: "I know Leek well and they have had to do a lot of rebuilding over the summer.

"They had a good win in the FA Cup last Saturday and, having missed out on promotion last season.

“They will want to be in the same position as we do at the end of the season.

"They are a very good side and we won’t be able to concede sloppy goals like we did against Leicester Nirvana last weekend.

"With Grant suspended for three matches, it was good to be able to secure deal for Antonio

“We also have doubts over the fitness of Connor Johnson (ankle), who is 50/50 at the moment."

Albans felt his side were always in charge against Leicester, who they beat 4-2 to set up a home game with Market Drayton Town in the next round, on October 3.

"I thought that we always looked comfortable," said Albans, "but we never really seemed to get out of second gear.

"The main thing, though, is that we are into the next round."
