Attenborough: "should have been literally 5-0 to us, and then by the end you're hanging on."

Nigel Oldrini

Lee Attenborough spoke to Chris Nelson after today's win at Bourne Town

CN: Lee, slightly nervy at the end, but a really dominant first half in particular. A fair result?

LA: Oh yes, yes, yes. Just a strange game because I'd just said it off camera to somebody.
You've gone from a game that could and probably should have been literally 5-0 to us, and then by the end you're hanging on.

First half we've scored two, we've hit the post, we've hit the bar, we've scored a goal that's offside that everyone thought was on and had numerous other chances and melees in the box, and you come in at half-time 2-0. You know the message is always the same at two nil.

Next goal is important. If we get it, the game's dead. If they get it, tails are up.

Then we miss a penalty, and that does bury the game if we score that. And then obviously at that point, I have to credit Bourne for the second half, because they turned up the tempo, they cranked it up, they put a front four on to our back four and literally went back to front early.

They were much more effective in the second half, so well done to them and the management team, it was a good change. And then for the last ten minutes we were just bodies on the line, but it was good to see both sides of the game today, because the bodies on the line that we put there in that last ten minutes is exactly what teams have done to us when it comes to the Raygar.

I keep saying about what the difference is between home and away, and sometimes it's us, but sometimes it's the opposition. People come to us and die for three points, and we've done that today.

CN: Do you like what you saw, Evan, on his third debut for Belper? He seemed to go really well alongside Draper from the off.

LA: Yes, I like him a lot playing with Draper. They worked obviously off each other really well, Draper’s had loads of flick-ons, Ev secures it in behind, and then his quality comes into it. I think our first goal came from him securing it and flashing it out to the left.

I think the only disappointment for Ev today would be that he hadn't scored. He hit the crossbar, I think he had one second half, I think he thought he was offside. He will know he should score that, but he was onside.

Again, it's another goal that buries the game if he gets it, but we're happy with his first outing. The lads are getting used to how he plays. We need to find his feet, because that's where he's good and dangerous, getting pinning people around the box.

Yes, it could have been more comfortable, but sometimes it feels like when you win that way, it's worth more than three points, but you can easily draw that at the end. Yeah, I say credit to them. They bombarded us with loads of crosses in direct play in the second half.

Yes, the crowd got up and I think we missed that penalty, and I think they scored it in a minute. Great ball, great header from them. So, swallow your medicine on it and we regrouped, but yes, second half was just bang, bang, transition game.

It was hard for it not to be that, because they went back to front, which is not a criticism, it really worked for them, so fair play.

CN: Tav off injured in the first half. Is there any early indication on how serious that might be?

LA: No, no, it's funny isn't it, because Eddie leaves this week, and I said to Eddie, man, you just have to be patient.

Things change quick in football. Tav comes off after, what, ten minutes, was it? But he was feeling it after two or three. Yeah, but Curt, the thing is, you put Curt out there, it gives you a different kind of wide player, Curt, because he'll tuck in, he'll keep you more solid, and that allowed Grats to maybe push a little bit higher on the other side, so we'd sort of become an inverted lopsided 4-3-3, if you like.

Again, I thought Curt covered loads of ground, played well, won us the penalty, and yeah, we just have to deal with that as it comes into our stride to assess that over the next couple of days, and yeah, we'll prepare for Alfreton on Tuesday.

CN: I was just going to come on to Alfreton Tuesday, break from the league, good chance, tough away game against a team one division higher, looking forward to the challenge.

LA: Yes, yes, and it gives us a chance to play some of the lads that haven't had loads of minutes recently.

I mean, a quick shout out for Ben Rhodes, because he's probably improved on the over the last, well, for longer than I've been here, over four years, and today he's come on again, and that one block he put in, in the box, incredible, said that to me at the end, like, attitude, different class, playing slightly out of position at left back, and he dove tails with Danny there a little bit.

But it gives us a chance to play him from the start, Ben, try and get more minutes for Ty again, who's on the bench today, and maybe Charlie as well, so yeah, we can have a look at a few things as well, but yeah, let's just see how the lads are coming from today, tough game that, long ninety minutes, especially the long last fifteen!
