Manager's Assessment - Bourne Town

Manager's Assessment - Bourne Town

Nigel Oldrini25 Apr - 20:18

'We've got that dangerous edge back to our game.'

CN: First of all, purely on today's game, a crazy 4-3 win, how did you see that?

LA: A 4-3 game that we've pretty much dominated from start to finish. Played some really good stuff, despite the pitch being horrendously bobbly. It wouldn't settle first half, but we kept trying to play.

(We) opened them up several times and we've had to score four good goals. Obviously, we conceded some real poor ones again. That's been the story for the last month or two.

We were in no danger at any point whatsoever. First half was the most one-sided game we've been involved in this year. All due respect to them, they've come to try and do a job and sit in.

But we must have had 70% of the ball. Good possession, not just pointless possession. The first 35 minutes felt like we were getting to really good areas.

Loads of chances, chances to create chances. I think we got too comfortable in the game. I think we started to play too many square balls, too many slow passes.

(We) dropped the tempo, we stopped making third man runs. Then you invite a bit of pressure on. I'd say the first goal for them, crap from us.

We don't clear our lines properly, then we give away a silly foul. We flail our leg at an average free kick, and it finds its way into the bottom corner. They’re the goals we are letting in at the minute.

That's the frustrating side of it. The flip side is we've now had two games on the bounce, especially first half last week and then pretty much all game this week where we've looked very lively going forward. We've got that dangerous edge back to our game.

That's obviously come at a good time. I just want to credit them as well. Especially even at 4-2, they're still having a go and they've scored.

All the best to them moving forward. At home and away they've been a credit. Good club, nice people.

I had good chats with their management team as well. I'm not sure what's happened to them in terms of reprieves and whatnot today or relegation, but just good luck to them all.

CN: Moving forward, Basford Tuesday night. Two draws against them in the main stage of the league. It's been pretty even so far. How do you see that on Tuesday night?

LA: Well, if the best Basford turn up and the best Belper turn up, it'll be a hell of a game.
Two good teams. Today we've got the good, the bad and the ugly. If we turn up and we're at it, then we fancy a chance against anybody, not just Basford, but anybody.

They will be saying the exact same though. It's going to be one of them games. Just hope it's well reffed and both sides are at it and hopefully the best team wins.

CN: How important was it to finish fourth? Because it obviously still gives us a slight chance of potentially another home match in the play-off final.

Yes, it's one game at a time. Let's just worry about Tuesday.

I'm not even letting everyone thought about next Saturday. Just got to do our job this next couple of days and sit and rest on our legs. Ice bathing and all the rest of it.

Manage our bodies properly. Then we'll set up again for Tuesday. After that, we'll see what happens.

I think for us, it wasn't just about finishing fourth. It's about finishing on a high here in front of our supporters, over eight hundred again today. Massive crowd.

Families are here and all the rest of it. Nice day. These are the games where we want to try and put on a show.

I feel like we did that. It's a real end-to-end game in many aspects and lots of goals. We wanted to win for everybody here, for the club, but also to give us confidence and momentum heading into Tuesday.

It wasn't necessarily about being fourth. It was about go over with a bit of a feel-good factor behind us. I think we've done that.

CN: And that feel-good factor, particularly in the forward areas, must feel at a really high level at the moment. Kev missed the Loughborough match, came back, and scored last week. Scored a hat-trick today. Diego has come back and scored two goals in two games as well. Jacob, outstanding today, setting at least two of the goals up.

LA: I think I've said even in that sticky spell we had; they don't turn into bad players overnight. I even said when we got some criticism, these are good players and you do run out of form at certain times in the season. You know you best need to grind it out.

That's what we didn't do well enough for a few weeks. But obviously, Kev. I think since the Rugby Town away game, he's been a bit out of sorts.

Last week, he was unplayable. I think Long Eaton here; he was very good before he missed the Loughborough game. And obviously again today, three goals.

Diego did today exactly what Diego does. Very good in the pocket. He allows runners to get beyond him.

And when he gets a chance, he scores. I think he scored maybe five goals for us. I think he probably only had six chances in his combined games for us.

So, he's a ruthless finisher. We know that. Obviously, with Diego, it's just about the other side of his game.

And I feel like when we went three goals on him, one of their goals in casual, a good header down the line. And their centre half came through with a big free side foot clearance. And turned us round.

They scored from it. So, they're the bits from Diego that we want more from him on. The dirty work if you like.

There's no doubt in and around the box. He's your man, isn't he?
