Manager's Assessment - Heaton Stannington

Nigel Oldrini22 Dec 2024 - 10:36

'we played better in the first half than second, but maybe in the second half we were a little bit more effective in what we did.'

We gave away too many fouls around the box and it was one of those games, and in the end, we won fairly comfortably. We needed the second goal I think but in the first half we were really good.

We obviously scored the goal early which helps to settle nerves and then we probably had two or three (chances) and the ‘keepers pulled off some fantastic saves so full credit to him and he kept the score line down today.

If we’d come in two or three up, I wouldn’t have complained but I think we played better in the first half than second, but maybe in the second half we were a little bit more effective in what we did.

I just felt that when we got the second goal it was fairly comfortable after that we wanted the clean sheet and there were a couple of decent saves from KP at the end.

There was some really solid defending across the back line from everyone and particularly I thought Evo in the back line; he’s a bit of an unsung hero, but in the last two games he’s been immense for us.

So, I’m happy for the lads at the back and it’s nice to get both strikers on the scoresheet as well so there’s loads of positives.

We need to use the squad, and I keep saying to the boys in the dressing room we need the lads on the bench to have the right attitudes.

We don’t expect them to be happy to be left out, but we expect them to try and prove me wrong every time they come on the pitch and the lads that came on today have done that.

I don’t think the subs have changed games recently whereas they were earlier in the season when they were impacting off the bench, so we want a bit more from the lads who aren’t starting games to give me more headaches moving forward.

I decided to leave Mase out as he’s started nearly every game for the last two seasons, and I just thought Nathan needed a game. We wanted to go four, four, two with the two big lads upfront and we thought three games in ten days and with the wind whirling, it may be a bit more of an aggressive game.

We wanted to put Nathan in today and that’s paid off; Mase’s come on and done really, well. He’s put his foot on the ball and turned into good areas when he needed to and that impacted the game.

I thought Terry looked sharp, so there were loads of positives and I think that win there probably makes the last two draws look OK. After twenty-one games and in the second half of the season we’re in a great position.

If we repeat what we’ve done in the first half of the season in the second half, we will be in and around in the top three slots never mind the play offs.

So, one game at a time and it’s another tough one on Boxing Day and I’ve told the lads to look after their bodies, shall we say, over the next few days and see if we can put our foot down moving forward.
