Manager's Assessment - Kidsgrove Athletic

'I think we got what we deserved, not because we didn't have enough chances to win the game, because we did'

Yes, well I'm more disappointed, I think we got what we deserved, not because we didn't have enough chances to win the game, because we did, but if you don't take the chances that we had, you hit the post, we hit the bar, we missed the penalty, and then you decide not to go with your runners on a transition, you get what you deserve and we got punished with the last kick of the game at that point, there's obviously no time to get back into it.

I thought the first half was a real non-event. I'll be honest, I thought we were really, really poor first half. I felt it in the dressing room, I said to the boys, I know there always seems to be that little dip in that first week, you've won those two games, it feels like it's FA Cup, I think it's a bit of a day off I suppose.

I could feel it, I could sense it, so I did warn them about it, it's full tilt. We could have made four or five changes today, we decided not to, we kept it as consistent as it has been in the first two games because we wanted to see us go up another notch. In fact, that was a couple of steps backwards.

We need to win the (Lichfield) game, it's as simple as that. It's a difficult one to swallow that because despite being ultra poor, where we were poor today, we had a lot of chances, especially second half, but we have to find that ruthless edge. We're just not clinical enough, we're getting lots of chances where we're not pulling the trigger.

It's only a matter of time before you come a cropper because of that. You can't keep hanging on to one nil leads. In tight games, we've defended the last two games really well to make sure we got the points, but today, I'm looking at players there who paused in transition, we're on the halfway line when they scored, but they're the players that knock on your door and that's why they're not playing.

It's disappointing. We take our medicine, take it nothing away from Kidsgrove. I thought they brought Rheady on and when they did, it changes the game because they've got a focal point up there, people get around him and we just didn't manage that danger well enough.

We lost a lot of first contact, which to a degree you can accept against a player like that, but then you have to be good on second balls. When you're not, that can happen to you and that's what's undone us.
