CN: They hung on in there in the end for a 2-1 victory. The mood in the dressing room must be really happy after that one.
LA: Yes, look, that's a reaction from the boys, because we've had a fair share of pelters, I think, in the last two or three games.
In some cases, rightly so, because we've not been at it. That was the team talk today. I must have said, we're at it today, probably fifteen times, because that's what I wanted.
I always say there will be ups and downs in quality, but you can't be… We look like a side with nothing to play for these last two or three weeks. We've obviously been really disappointed in-house. We get the disappointment from supporters because we haven't been at it, but today, massive, massive difference.
The energy from us, and that's myself included. I said to Wainy on the way here today, we've got to be different, because we're usually fairly relaxed on the touchline, but today we thought we'll be on it as well. We'll be shouting for every ball and sort of change style ourselves a little bit.
But we were just all over them, especially that second half, and it's the first time in a long time we've sustained pressure. We're always there or there abouts in terms of we can sling it in the box, and we can have little breakaways, but sustaining pressure for ten, fifteen-minute spells, we haven't been great at recently, and I thought we were a lot better at that today. But it's a lot of difference from some individuals today.
Kev looked unplayable again. Jordan was superb at right-back. Jono, a different class in midfield.
Curt pinned the midfield at the base really well, didn't give Matthews much space to play off Garnett. I just thought it was a really, really good performance from back to front. I thought second half especially, I thought we were well on top, other than Jordan's almost crazy own goal.
I can't really remember KP having loads to do, but you always have to be wary of Long Eaton because they shift it well around the box. They lend it into Garnett, he's superb, he's really reliable on the ball, and they can get runners around him. In the first half, they nearly got in a couple of times.
But I think what I'm most pleased with is we've obviously lost a few games: we've not been great at home. We conceded a goal that, when the right-back cuts inside and it bobbles up on his left foot and he hooks it top corner, I mean, how many of them go in? Ninety-nine percent of the time that's over the bar and you get away with it. But just our luck at the minute, he's found the top corner, and you think, here we go again.
Just the reaction was superb. I just said to the boys in there, where's that been? Where's that energy been? Because when we are like that and we're at it from back to front, we can beat anybody. Long time coming that performance and I'm mostly pleased for the players because they've had some flack.
But I'm certainly delighted for the club and also the loyal supporters who, even through thick and thin, have sent me messages this last couple of weeks saying keep going and that's not lost on me. I get you're going to get fans on our backs at times because everyone wants the team to win and do well. But a few comments about this league being an easy one and we should be winning it: it's just crazy talk.
Some great sides in this league. We lost three on the bounce and it hurt us a lot. But you look at Carlton, superb side, they lost three on the bounce.
It happens at this level, if you're not at it, week in, week out and we haven't been at it. So hopefully that's a corner turned, let's not get carried away because there's three games left and we've got to replicate that next week.
But the last thing I would say is, supporters might get the team sheet today and see we've got a full bench but we had one player, Luke Shaw, who was fit and that's to be honest with you, he'll be disappointed not to get on the pitch today but I didn't risk bringing him on because I thought if someone goes down injured, he's our only player.
Lewis Austin, Matt Bowman, Ben Rhodes all got injured on Saturday. So, what a shift from that eleven if they played the full ninety, unbelievable.
CN: Three games to go now, home monkey that we've spoken about is off our back and results have gone our way again and a five-point cushion to the team outside of the play-offs now. There must be a lot of confidence that those play-offs are within touching distance.
LA: I always say I'll let other people do the worrying. Even when we lose two or three, I don't panic.
I do have sleepless nights over it because I want to do really well and I want to build something successful here but I don't panic because when I built this squad, we knew it was a good squad and we saw that in the first half of the season so your form doesn't always last.
Obviously, with games running out, you need to start to hit form but I'm not going to get carried away because it's just one game and we've got to rest our legs because they’ll be heavy this week because we've had three games in six days and we've rolled out the same lads as always because they're an honest bunch.
If the fans didn't see today a team that wanted it, well, they did see that, didn't they? If they didn't, they're watching a different game to me.
So, pleased with that, the endeavour more than anything. Like I say, quality will dip, we probably should have scored a couple more. John had a free header in the box that he got really well for but if he hits the target, it goes in.
Kev's got his man 1v1 and, to be fair, they put in two or three good blocks defensively so maybe another day you get another one and make it more comfortable but to grind out a 2-1 there and manage it so well in the corner at the end after the spell we've had, we take it all day and we're pleased with that.
