Manager’s Assessment – Pontefract Collieries

Manager’s Assessment – Pontefract Collieries

Nigel Oldrini6 Nov 2024 - 15:27

'The game plan was carried out perfectly.'

The game plan was carried out perfectly. We did say on Saturday that we were going to look at the home game videos, and I said to the players on Saturday that this place has to be a hard place to come.

We’ve been too open, and I made no bones about that at the weekend even though we won the game I wasn’t too pleased. Tonight, we asked for a little bit different sort of style of play in terms of where I wanted the back line, what I wanted from the midfielders, where we wanted the wide lads.

And it came off and its credit to the players for buying in. We probably sent them eight or nine video clips over the last couple of days to digest and really had a robust game plan for tonight.

We’ve come up against a side who fight for everything, Pontefract are always the same and we’ve probably made a real banana skin of a game into a comfortable night.

I thought our two centre halves were fantastic; they were further up the pitch tonight which meant that Curt and Mason as a pair, would dominate midfield and I thought those two were superb.

Curt was everywhere and Mason, for the first time in a number of weeks showed his quality closer to the opposition box. He did a lot of running, a lot of digging in, and we saw a lot of the through balls and breaking runs he went on.

When you get higher up the pitch and when you’ve got Rawson and Draper there pinging people around the box if you get bodies close to them, you’re always going to cause problems.

We scored at good times as well, but when you’re on the sidelines sometimes you’re not sure which way the game’s going to go, I felt relatively comfortable tonight.

We’ve won three on the bounce if you include the Carlton game, and I did some stats work earlier as I’m always looking at my stats. Its crazy that the start of the season that some teams have had, and I was looking at our points per game before tonight.

Over the season we would have got the same points that Hebburn did last season and they won the league. So, we’ve got off to a bit of a flyer and we’ve won eleven out of fifteen, and its just a case of two other teams above us have gone just as quick and in Cleethorpes’ case even quicker.

But we’re just trying to hang on to their coat tails at one game at a time, but it’s still early days as we’re only fifteen games in and just past a third of the way through the season now so you get a good idea as to where you are, and what you are about.

I just thought tonight that we looked more just like a team. The last couple of weeks, yes, we’ve won games but we’ve kind of been relying on magic from Drapes or from someone else. Tonight, it was a proper team performance, and I don’t think they had a shot on target for the first seventy-five minutes.

We made five changes to freshen it up and get lads minutes and at that point we did become a little disjointed and lost a bit of balance to the side. You take the clean sheet and there were a couple of good saves from K P right at the end to keep that intact.

And we roll on to Saturday and see if we can do that again.
