Manager's Assessment - Racing Club Warwick

Manager's Assessment - Racing Club Warwick

Nigel Oldrini7 Mar - 21:23

'I can take that point and move on because the squad was threadbare today.'

CN: So, you have to settle for a point this afternoon, a nil, nil draw against Racing Club Warwick. Not a huge amount to talk about, how did you see the game?

LA: Yeah, I thought, listen, I thought, hard-fought point, I thought we played well. Second half, I thought, first half was even, probably 50-50.

They started better than us, we finished the half-stronger. Second half, I thought we were in control of the game, we don't think they troubled as much. KP's not had a shot to save second half.

And, yes, last 15 or 20 minutes, we were trying our best to turn the screw, just didn't quite fall in the box for us. After a three-week lay-off, it's a decent performance. That was tough because they're a hell of a big side, they've come and played a flat back five.

They've changed shape, again, we watched their game last week and they were back four. We had a plan for how we thought they'd set up, but they've come for a back five. And, yes, it didn't leave us a lot of space in behind.

I think we probably had a couple of decent sniffs first half, nothing clear-cut. But then they've not had much clear-cut either, so, cagey game. I think a draw's probably a fair result, can't complain.

But I think for our boys, you know, I can take that point and move on because the squad was threadbare today. We had two fit subs. But then next week, all of a sudden, you've got John Wafula back, you've got Jordan Fankwe who's now finally back, and Ben Rhodes should be fit.

So, you know, that's three real big players, real big additions, strong additions, experienced blokes, really. So that should see us in good stead for the run-in. So, we wanted to win the game, of course we did.

But we took a point. You know, it's another tough side that's come here that, you know, they've not been on a great run recently. But, you know, they've picked up some wins this season.

I think they beat Carlton 4-0 and they beat Anstey. So, they're a good side.

And I think the league position sometimes, when that cluster in the middle is so tight, you know, league positions can’t tell the full truth at the minute.

So, yes, we take the point, we move on. And, yes, we know we need to put a couple of wins on the board, but there's ten games left. And, you know, I feel we're in a good position.

CN (I’ll) finish with a quick word on the skipper, Jack Broadhead. Lost him to injury earlier. Is there any prognosis yet on how that might be?

LA: No, he just jarred his back, which he's done before. So, I think we want to try and catch it early. But, you know, what I say there about being happy with the point, it's because of things like that.

You know, they are a hell of a big side. And after that, you take him out of the team, (skipper), you've got Evo in there, Liam in there with a bit of height.

But the rest are small. And we fared a little bit on set pieces. But then the second half was mostly playing their half of the pitch, I don't think they got any set pieces second half, maybe one or two.

Well, Curt Burrows has filled in at right back. Not ideal but done a really good job. Lewis obviously comes on.

We've had to play Grats and Shaw in the midfield three, which you're a bit gung-ho and a bit wide open there. And the flip side of it is you can have quality on the ball on the ball. But the pitch was bobbly today, it was dry.

So, it was difficult for either team to get anything going, which meant it became a physical battle. And when it did with the size of their players and the physicality they've got, you'd expect them to roll us over, but they didn't. We stood up to it.

So, yes, we take the point. We're obviously really, really, really disappointed with a couple of decisions. You know, they've handled when keepers caught it outside the box and six hundred people have seen it and two haven't.

That didn't go our way. And then obviously Lewis's red card, which is right in front of me. There's absolutely no malice in it from Lewis. He's just literally left the foot in. The lads gone to clear it down the line, kicked his studs, gone down. Straight red card.

And then Lewis misses three games. No, we can swallow that with Jono and Jordan back. But how harsh is that on Lewis? He's waited for his chance.

He got a good chunk of the game today. And then, you know, when they're booking, two out of our dugout and two out of their dugout. And then they tell you we're being assessed.

And I just say it to you every time, Chris, when they're being assessed, the decisions are different. And how they handle games and manage games are different. So maybe the assessors need to change the way they look at things, because I panic every time refs tell us we're being assessed, because the game just, it's a different game.

And yes, it takes all the... What word do I want to use? It takes all the energy out of you on the side because you want to be passionate. You want to be in the game. You want to be fighting with your lads.

And, you know, you don't say a word. So, yes, we're disappointed with that. And I think we were just... that last ten minutes, I thought, we're going to throw the kitchen sink in, we'll nick one.

I felt we'd win it. And then obviously (the) red card, and that kills your momentum a bit. And even with ten, we were the better team. But that extra body maybe made a difference. Might not have done, but it might have done.

So, another decision that went against us. I thought we had a should have had a hand ball in the box first half, could have had a penalty.

Exactly the same as the pen that was given against us in the 96th minute against Anstey. And they're your frustrations, because one week it is and one week it's not.

And obviously when you're on the wrong side of them two or three times on the row, you know, people might say it evens out over the course of a season, but you just feel like you've been a bit hard done to.
