Manager's Assessment - Racing Club Warwick

Nigel Oldrini2 May - 20:24

'I think when I have a chance to reflect and look back, we'll certainly be proud of the season we've had'

CN: Lee, heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat this afternoon. I know it's still probably a bit raw, but just somehow, how are you feeling?

LA: Yes, obviously gutted. Really strange feeling because I'm gutted but I'm proud because, again, we've had a real shift out of the players.

We've left everything on the pitch. I think in normal time we were the better team, in extra time we were the better team. And sadly, we haven't managed to get over the line.

But, yes, look, massive crowd, 1,700 and something here. And I think you've seen the team that gave what they had. Really fine margins in the game, which we knew it would be.

Like I say, same as Basford on Tuesday, two really competitive teams. The game wasn't as slick as Tuesday. I thought Tuesday was a fast tempo, felt like a higher-level game.

Today was more of a bit of a slog fest. They're direct and that's not a discredit to them because they're effective at it, two big forwards. And we struggled to get rhythm, but I still thought we created the best openings.

I think when we got the goal, you think, right, sit on this for a couple of minutes, settle us down. And I think within 15 seconds they equalised and that was our undoing today. The penalties can happen, but conceding that goal so quickly and such a poor goal, that undid us.

So, you know, we're disappointed, obviously, naturally. But, yes, I think when I have a chance to reflect and look back, we'll certainly be proud of the season we've had. There's progress again on last year.

And, yes, I'm just gutted for the players and the supporters more than anything else that we haven't managed to go one more.

CN: Looking back at the season as a whole, obviously another season at Step 4 now, how would you judge out of ten the season as a whole?

LA: It’s hard to say out of ten, Chris. I mean, before the ball was kicked, the aim was playoffs and we did that.

So, essentially, we've achieved our objectives. But, of course, when you get in the position, we have today, you know, you want the dream of getting that promotion. And I just think, listen, penalties, it's a complete lottery, isn't it?

You know, it could have gone either way when I think KP saved their fifth and then we scored our next two.

And you think if you save one, one goes over, one goes wide, you're in the next division up.

So, it is literally the finest of margins. But credit to them, look, they came, and they'll probably be the first to say they came for a draw.

You know, I don't think they've even tried to attack in extra time. And that's fair play to them. They've done their job.

They've kept solid at the back. Yeah, I think we were a bit more clinical. We win the game.

But I don't want to reflect too much on that game as an individual because there's no point in picking the bones out of it. We have to move on to the summer now. But, you know, bigger picture is the club's in a good place.

We've made progress year on year since we've been here. And, yes, I'd say it's my job now to try and reflect in these next couple of weeks. Look at what we think we can change and tweak and improve on.

And that's obviously personnel, but it's myself as well. You know, I keep saying we want to run, but I'm still thirty-five myself and I've got loads to learn. And, yes, like I say, we've got to lick our wounds a bit.

It'll take a few weeks to get over that one. But we gave it our all. We gave it our best.
That's from myself to Wainey, all the staff, down to the players, everyone at the club. I don't think we could have given them anymore.

Lee Attenborough was talking to Chris Nelson.
