(I was) disappointed in the performance again. I think that was a bit of a carry-on from Saturday if I'm honest. We've set a bar this season so far, where in the last two games we've not reached that bar, whether that's a little bit of tiredness.
Every team probably goes through a bit of a sticky patch. Tonight, we didn't look slick at all. I mean, that first half was borderline abysmal, I'll be honest.
We wanted to start on the front foot. They're a young, energetic side and they're a team that had some funny results and some really good results. They beat Warwick 5-0 and results like that.
When you've got a young side like they are that are hungry, if you allow them into the game and let them gain confidence, they can hurt you. We know their front foot are lively and busy. It's a fair play to them.
I thought they played like the experienced side in the first half. They were hitting it in good areas. They were getting it in from tight spaces, flying it out to their right winger who came in at a tough time, especially in the first half.
You can see they stuck to their plan, and they were busy and got about us. Won first balls, won second balls, didn't give us any freebies. Again, we lost the midfield battle in the last two games running.
I said that I tried to change personnel today and the same thing happened. We just looked flat-footed at the minute. When we did get a chance to hit good areas, we were smashing it straight down the middle at neck height.
Just real, real drastic lack of quality. But again, it can happen. The message at half-time was, if the quality is not there, do the other side well.
I have to say, I've got no complaints in the second half. We gave everything in that second half. We threw what we had at it.
The quality still wasn't amazing, but at least the endeavour was there. The desire was there. I didn't see that in the first half and that's the difference.
Again, I'm not criticising Shepshed for this, but that's the second team that have got a goal up against us and absolutely killed the clock, which we do exactly the same. I've got no complaints on it, but we've got to stop allowing teams to get a foothold in games and stop allowing teams to get a goal up against us.
Otherwise, you have to expect that. Then we need to rise above that and not get drawn in by it. It's difficult in that second half. To (only) add five minutes on is criminal by the referee, but the nine goes down for four minutes.
In the first minute of the second half, there's five subs, there's other injuries and all the rest of it. We are where we are. To be fair, even if you put seven or eight on, there's no guarantee that we score.
It's a bit unjust. Just from our perspective, we've just got to be more ruthless. Although we weren't great, we have to score that chance at the back post.
Kev will be disappointed. He probably should have scored in the first half as well. You come in, you’re winning 2-1.
Having not played that well, you go, do you know what? Three points. We're not best players in performance, but obviously you take it and you move on. Now we're missing those chances, whereas earlier in the season, we might have fired our own.
It's one of those where we've not been at our best. From a goal down, you may be taking the point, but we really think we should have had all three.
It's one of those. We have to be honest. We're still punching the ball our way to being second place.
There's no doubt about that with the clubs and things in this league and what other people are doing. We are in a very good position. Obviously, you give yourself a foothold in the league after 15 or 16 games where you've been touching distance at the top, you've got to try and hang on for as long as you can.
I'd say even though there's a long way to go, it'd take a massive swing for us to finish top of this league now. For us, it's about trying to build and get rid of some of the bad habits that I still think we've got. I tried to simplify the game for the lads today.
The ball doesn't stay in midfield. It's one touch and it's out. It's in spaces.
We're still getting caught on the ball in bad areas. We're still dallying on it. We're still not hooking the balls on properly, miskicking too many.
Just real basics. We should be talking about that at this level. We even did it second half.
We've got to go a bit bigger and turn them around. I thought they did that really well tonight. The amount of times Jack was on his back foot, having to win one, Keenan was turned around so was Rhodesy.
I don't think we did that to them enough. When we did the few times in the second half, we got in behind and they felt like we could score. It's a little bit back to basics, but I don't want to go too overboard.
What's that, twenty league games? We've lost three. Before a ball was kicked, if you say to me, you lose three out of twenty, you snap your hand off. We've lost to Carlton and Corby.
I can't remember who else we lost to. We've lost to two of the top sides. We're doing all right, but I just think me being me, you get a bit impatient and you want more.
Sometimes when you see what those lads produce, is there a frustration that the consistency is maybe not quite there to be a really, really top side? I think I said that to you maybe six or seven weeks ago when we won a couple. I said, look, we're a good side, but are we a top side?
The hallmark is there that we're not. Because those types of games on Tuesday night at home, wind's swirling, they're the games where you really need to stand up.
I said that to the boys at half-time. I want to see what you’re made of. I watched them closely second half. Because sometimes it isn't about the result.
I was looking for body language. I was looking for work rate, desire, willing to put their head where it hurts. Because it's easier when you're winning, when you've won three on the bounce and everything's great.
That at half-time today was important for me to see what that reaction was second half. I think we got it. Like I said, the quality wasn't there at all times, but a little bit more endeavour.
They will be dusted down. It's another point. As much as you want to win the game, when you're a goal down and not playing great, maybe you just take it, and you move on.
We've got another two home games now. Those two draws we just had away from home last week and then Tuesday night straight away. If we can win on Saturday, maybe it turns those two into decent points and then we'll look forward.
There's still loads to improve on. I just want a bit more from people.
